Shot of the Season 21-22: Hilliger Pix

By Ian Townsend

We asked our fabulous Pitching In Isthmian Photographers to choose their favourite photograph of the campaign, and tell us why it is important to them.

We’ve had a magnificent Pitching In Isthmian season, one which has been illustrated and enriched by the work of a number of brilliant photographers, who have recorded it for posterity. John Hilliger from Hilliger Pix brings us his very favourite image of the season.

• When was the image taken (match, event, etc)?

Cray Wanderers v East Thurrock United – Pitching In Isthmian Premier League – 20th April 2022

• Why is it important to you?

Not one of my action shots but after a tough season for Cray Wanderers (3 Managers, 67 different players & a relegation battle) this match was a 6 pointer. It meant a lot to everyone who supports and also works for the club. In this match, the team clicked and put 4 goals past a close relegation rival. This photo is from the celebrations after the fourth goal was scored and the CEO Sam Wright joined in the celebrations. It still went down to the last game of the season but this photo showed how much fight the team and those who work tirelessly for the club, have, and how much it means (also this was the game the players realised where I was and ran to celebrate in front of the camera).

• Where can we find the rest of your work?

On my website, which can be found here. And my social media, here.

• How and why did you begin taking photographs at football matches?

I am relatively new to photography, I have always had a love for any sport. One day I wanted to take up photography, so I borrowed a camera and lens (thanks to the father in law), watched Youtube videos to self-teach myself and used some contacts (I worked with one of the players brothers). Then I was pitch side with the steep and continuous learning curve. I love the fact I can capture the moment in a fast, sometimes hectic, sport.

• What are your hopes for the forthcoming season?

Next season, Cray Wanderers have Neil Smith in charge and I am looking forward to photographing the team higher up the league without the stress of relegation and seeing more goals. I would also hope that more players will run towards me when they celebrate scoring (not just me, every photographer would love this)! I would also look to increase the games I photograph not only in the Isthmian League but in the National League too.

If you regularly take photographs at our matches but haven't yet submitted yours, there's still time. Send it to Ian at townsendaround@gmail.com
