Shot of the Season: Martin Denyer

By Ian Townsend

We asked our fabulous photographers to pick their favourite photograph of the Pitching In Isthmian campaign, and explain why it’s important to them. Martin generally photographs Bognor, but he’s gone for a shot featuring the opposition.

When was the image taken (match, event, etc)?

Looking back through the season my favourite photo comes from my visit to Canvey Island when the Essex side came from behind to overcome my beloved Bognor to win 3-2.

Why is it important to you?

I like this photo because it highlights the wonderful relationship between players and fans that we so commonly see in non-league football.

The image contains the unbridled joy both on and off the pitch, flags, beer, grass and sunshine.
All the ingredients needed for a perfect day.

Where can we find the rest of your work?

My photos can be found on Flickr- here.

How and why did you begin taking photographs at football matches?

I began to take sports photos at the beginning of the 21/22 season. It was during the Covid restrictions and helped my mental health by giving me something to focus on (literally).

What are your hopes for the forthcoming season?

Not answered- Martin, if you want to add, please get in touch!
