Should Ware beware?

By Ian Townsend

Any one of three sides could be top of the South Central on Saturday evening. And two of them meet at Woking Park. Here’s our preview of an exciting day across the entire division.

What a match we have in prospect at Woking Park, where our form side- Westfield- play our leaders- Ware. Field have been magnificent in recent weeks, unbeaten in nine matches and with five consecutive victories under their belt; Chalfont St Peter, FC Romania, Bedfont Sports, Ashford Town and South Park all being despatched. Three points behind our leaders, but with a better goal difference, a home win could see the side in yellow replacing the Blues at the summit; but Ware seem to have put their indifferent form behind them with wins over FC Romania and Chertsey Town. That said, the Blues three defeats in their last ten have all come against sides around them in the table, Hanwell Town, Waltham Abbey and Tooting & Mitcham United all coming away victorious.

If Ware were to succumb to the yellow hordes, however, Westfield will only go top if second place Hanwell Town fail to defeat Marlow. The visitors are very difficult to beat, having lost only four matches in seventeen- the main handicap last season’s Playoff semi finalists have faced is an inability to turn draws into victories. When the Geordies are good, they are very good indeed, as shown by their 5-0 thrashing of Barking and their three-nil win over Hertford Town last time out, but they’ve struggled for consistency since mid-November, hence their fall from the summit.

Fourth place Waltham Abbey would be top of the table were it based only on the last ten matches. The Abbotts are unbeaten over that period and in their last three matches defeated Ware, Harlow Town and Uxbridge, so won’t be afraid of visitors Bedfont Sports. Sports have also been in excellent form, however, with only one defeat in ten, and will be hoping to get back to winning ways after a defeat and two draws in their last three.

Tooting & Mitcham United, in fifth, seem to have regained their early season form, winning four of their last five- the four-one defeat against Chipstead in the middle of that run looking something of a freak result. They’ll face a tough task as sixth place Uxbridge travel to Imperial Fields hoping to narrow the five point gap that has opened up between themselves and the top five. Uxbridge have lost only two matches from their last ten, but a run of nine points from their last twenty one has seen them drop down the table.

Seventh place Barking are at home to Northwood. The Blues have lost only two of their last ten, winning seven of them, whilst the Woods head to Mayesbury park with a collection of new signings but on the back of four consecutive defeats.

Eighth travels to ninth as Harlow Town head to Chertsey Town. After eight matches without a win Harlow got back to winning ways last time out with victory over Staines Town, and will want to build on that, whilst the Curfews have only one win in nine- coincidentally against the same opponents- and will hope to rediscover their early season form and begin climbing back up the table.

Bracknell Town, much changed and much improved of late, host Hertford Town. The Robins have seven points from their last nine and defeated Premier Division side Lewes in the Velocity Trophy earlier this week, whilst the visitors have suffered five defeats in their last six, the only win coming against fellow strugglers FC Romania.

Chalfont St Peter host South Park. The Sparks, newly reinforced with the arrival of former Tooting striker Omari Hibbert, have only one defeat in five- that coming last time out against high-flying Westfield; whilst the Saints have gone three matches without a win, the only positive a draw against Chipstead.

The Chips, who have been in fine form with four wins and that draw from their last five matches, travel to face Staines Town. The Swans desperately need a win, having taken only two points from their last fifteen.

Finally, our bottom two meet. Ashford Town travel to take on FC Romania. The Tangerines have lost five matches in a row, but the Wolves can trump that, having lost eight consecutive matches and nine out of the last ten. It’s twenty eight matches since FC Romania kept a clean sheet, but they’ll never have a better chance to rectify that as Town have scored only nineteen goals all season.

Where next?
