Sparks go goal crazy as the Green Lions fail to roar

We asked yesterday whether the Green Lions of Guernsey could light a fire under the Sparks, but instead they ended up severely scorched, as South Park ran in six goals at Whitehall Lane last night.

South Park had won their previous five meetings against these opponents, and seemed to like the number five, as that’s how many goals they scored in the first half. Melford Simpson got two of those, the first and the third, and in between James Dickson made it two-nil on seven minutes, the hosts hitting their visitors with a very early one-two.

Ross Allen’s nineteenth goal of the season looked to have got Guernsey back into the match four minutes before half time, but that just spurred on the Sparks to immediately add two more, Sam King and Brendan Murphy-McVey with numbers four and five.

The second half was relatively sedate in comparison, but Simpson grabbed his hat trick and the match ball on sixty seven minutes to seal a six-one victory. Kieran Mahon rubbed salt in his own wounds late on, being dismissed as the game ebbed to a disappointing close for the Green Lions.

The Sparks are on a fine run, with only two defeats in eleven matches, and remain ninth. That’s twelve goals conceded in three games for their opponents, who have a six point cushion over the danger zone but won’t be feeling safe just yet.
