Stuttering start ends Borg era

Enfield Town

Enfield Town are looking for a new manager after announcing that George Borg had left the Ryman Premier club on Tuesday night.

Borg, pictured, took over last December at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium as the successor to Steve Newing on his return to Non-League football after nearly five years away.

In a short statement issue by the Towners, officials said they had "parted company" following Bank Holiday Monday’s 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Wingate & Finchley, their fourth reverse in six league outings.

Enfield say they will make a further statement on the 56-year-old’s departure in due course and in the meantime have asked assistant manager Bradley Quinton to hold the fort. He has taken charge of first team affairs until further notice, starting with Saturday’s trip to Hendon in the Ryman's top flight.

Before returning to English football from the USA, Borg last managed in Non-League as caretaker at Boreham Wood back in 2008 after a managerial career that took him to Barking, Chelmsford City, Chesham United, Harrow Borough, Enfield, Aldershot Town, Billericay Town, Hornchurch and Braintree Town.

As a player, he kicked off his career at Millwall before turning out for Wycombe Wanderers, Maidstone United, Dartford, Dulwich Hamlet, South Africa's Cape Town City and Carolina Lightning in the United States where he played alongside Rodney Marsh and Bobby Moore.
