Three cheers for the Greens

By Ian Townsend

Gorleston end a remarkable campaign by clinching the Norfolk Senior Cup at Carrow Road

A few months ago Gorleston looked to be heading straight for relegation. As recently as February 21st they were a firm fixture in the Pitching In Isthmian North Division bottom two, and indeed for nineteen of our thirty eight match days climbed no nigher than nineteenth place. A disastrous campaign looked to be on the cards...which makes the turnaround in their fortunes since even more remarkable.

The Greens ended the campaign with a run of four consecutive wins- but even more than that, following defeat to Grays Athletic on February 18th the only sides to defeat them were champions Hashtag United and promoted AFC Sudbury. A run of twenty nine points out of thirty nine saw them climb brilliantly to mid table security- and last night they ended the campaign with silverware, taking the Norfolk Senior Cup at a canter with a three-nil win over Dereham Town at Norwich City's Carrow Road last night.

After a tense opening spell the deadlock was finally broken four minutes before the break, Connor Deeks firing home- and the Greens made it two early in the second half, Craig Parker doubling their advantage. They made quite sure with fifteen minutes to play, Nathan Stewart making it three, and held on comfortably to ensure the celebrations could start.

Many congratulations to all at the club. Our image comes from the Norfolk County FA, with the photographer sadly as yet unnamed.
