Thursday Night Football!

By Ian Townsend

It isn’t often we have football on a Thursday, but we’ve fixtures in three Divisions tonight- Concord, Ashford Town and Hythe the hosts

Thursday Night football only tends to happen when the weather has been unkind for many months, and…well, if you’ve dried out sufficiently, here we go.

Pitching In Isthmian Premier has a match critical at both ends of the table, as fourth place Enfield Town travel to bottom side Concord Rangers. The Towners are six unbeaten and are aware that victory in Canvey this evening will take them up to third place. They will also be aware that, with Carshalton Athletic and Billericay Town only two points further back in sixth and seventh, it’s a match that they really wouldn’t want to lose!

The Beachboys have fallen to twelve points from safety, albeit with four games in hand. After five successive defeats, if ever there was going to be a night to bring that run to an end, tonight would be that night. The Towners local rivals, Cheshunt, will be doing something rather unusual tonight- praying for an away win which help to ease their own safety concerns.

When the sides met on Donkey Lane back in the sunny days of August, Town triumphed three-nil.

Pitching In Isthmian South Central sees Ashford Town welcome Badshot Lea. The Tangerines are eleven points clear of danger, but they have played three matches more than twentieth placed Binfield and this will make it four, and will be rather determined to avoid a fifth defeat in six matches. It’s been a strange few days for the visiting Baggies, who hit Northwood for four on Saturday only to be hit for six by the same opponents on Tuesday night- and they’ll want to quickly regain an even keel and narrow the gap on the top ten. Badshot Lea won the first meeting between the sides, on November 7th, by three goals to nil.

Hythe Town host our match in Pitching In Isthmian South East, and they also host bottom side Beckenham Town. The Cannons are eighth, and ten points away from the top five- but with five games in hand, so are very much part of the promotion picture, or at least will be should they remain regularly victorious. With only one defeat from seven they seem to be gathering momentum- and we all remember what happened when they did that last season! Becks also played a big part in last seasons promotion picture, which is perhaps why their descent towards the abyss is particularly surprising this time around. Bottom of the table and nine points from safety, this is now their only game in hand over the sides they are chasing, and they really can’t afford not to win it- but with only one win in ten, getting wins has been rather beyond them of late.

The sides meet again on April 6th.
