Enfield Town have parted company with manager Steve Newing after he paid the price for his struggling Ryman Premier side’s fourth straight defeat on Tuesday night.

The Towners lost 3-0 at home to Wingate & Finchley and on Wednesday paid tribute to Newing and coach Jason Dale after announcing they’d both left the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium in the wake of the reverse, their tenth of the campaign in league action.

Newing arrived in May 2009 and leaves them fourth from bottom after stabilising the club in Ryman North before winning promotion to the Ryman’s 2012-13 top flight campaign. He had maintained faith in the side that won promotion two years ago and successfully negotiated their way through their inaugural Ryman Premier season.

Despite reinforcing over the summer and Newing’s hard work, Enfield’s Board say they decided a change was needed with results failing to improve and their league position continuing to deteriorate.

Chairman Paul Millington, who has now launched the hunt to appoint Newing’s successor, said: "No one has tried harder than Steve over the last few weeks to try and improve our results. Sadly it has not worked out but we have a great deal to thank Steve and Jason for over the last five seasons.

"What they achieved on limited resources at a time when the club was having to financially concentrate on a new stadium was something to be proud of. The club wishes them the very best for the future."

Newing paid tribute to the club and its fans after news of his departure was announced on the club’s official website. He said: "The supporters have been great and even in the last couple of months during our bad run of for, apart from the few who have finally got their wish, have been no different to during the good times.

"I leave in my opinion with my head held high and being the manager who led the club to the Ryman Premier Division. No one can take that away from me and I am proud to be a part of the history of the club. I would like to wish all connected with Enfield Town FC all the best for the future."
