Tuesday Night Football

By Ian Townsend

We’ve big games in the Pitching In Isthmian Premier, North and South Central, and the start of the Velocity Trophy

In the Pitching In Isthmian Premier this evening all eyes are on Donkey Lane, as Enfield Town welcome Horsham- seventh v fifth. A home win will take the Towners up into fifth and drop the Hornets down a place, and the hosts will be confident, unbeaten in three matches and having scored nine goals and kept two clean sheets. The Hornets, in contrast, have hit a bump in the road, and don’t have a win from their last three. They also have only one away win from five matches this season, having failed to win on the road since the opening day. The last time they met was also at Donkey Lane, on April 2nd, Jeremiah Gyebi scoring the only goal in a one-nil win for Town, who did the double over their opponents last season.

In Pitching In Isthmian North, Stowmarket Town could climb into the top five with a win over East Thurrock United- although it would have to be a fairly comprehensive win, and it’s more likely they’d end up being one of five clubs on ten points. Stow haven’t quite found last seasons form yet, although they are undefeated in four in all competitions and have won their last three. The Rocks haven’t yet found their feet since relegation, and have won only one league match- the last one, against Brentwood Town- but they have won four of their ten matches across league and cups. The one result they haven’t managed so far is a draw.

We’ve a massive match in Pitching In Isthmian South Central. Our leaders, Northwood, have won six matches out of six and opened up a five point gap at the top, but tonight they face perhaps their biggest challenge so far this season as they travel to face Walton & Hersham. The Swans start the night in fifth, but have been so busy with the FA Cup and FA Trophy that they haven’t played a league match since August Bank Holiday Monday. They’ve gone ten matches without defeat in all competitions, and the fact that they are still in both cup competitions tells its own story- but without another league match until October 15th due to further knockout commitments they’ll be desperate to pick up three points to keep their promotion ambitions ticking along. Northwood, however, will be determined not to let that happen, and another victory will stretch that gap to an incredible- at this stage of the season- eight points.

We also kick off in the Velocity Trophy this evening. It’s difficult to preview such matches as you never quite now what sides our clubs will send out, but we have a fabulous match between South Central promotion hopefuls Binfield and Marlow in the First Round. Second v third in the South Central table, the Moles are having an incredible campaign, still in the FA Cup and the FA trophy and unbeaten all season, having won their last eight matches. Marlow have only the League to concentrate on, but they have won both of their last two league matches three-nil.

Chichester City and Burgess Hill Town meet in a Sussex derby, whilst we’ve an Essex derby as Coggeshall Town welcome Basildon United.

Two of the best performing sides in the Pitching In Isthmian North division meet at the seaside, as Felixstowe & Walton United welcome Witham Town. The Seasiders are unbeaten in the league, whilst Town have won six of their last seven matches in all competitions and have had their best start to a campaign in rather a long time.

We’ve also a clash of two Pitching In Isthmian South East promotion contenders, as Whitehawk host Ashford United- third v fourth in the league table. The Hawks are still unbeaten in the league, whilst the Nuts and Bolts have lost only one of their last six in all competitions. The Enclosed Ground will welcome back former Hawks hero Henry Muggeridge, recently arrived at Ashford.
