Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Ryman Premier leaders Leiston were on the end of a 4-0 hammering at East Thurrock United on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Sam Higgins gave the Rocks a 36th minute lead that Lewis Smith eventually doubled on the hour-mark. Smith added a crucial third six minutes later and then Higgins matched him by completing his brace five minutes from time.

Dulwich Hamlet moved up to third spot after completing a rare victory at `bogey` ground Imber Court against Metropolitan Police.

Hamlet have had a poor record at the Met but took a 24th minute lead through Jacob Erskine. Ashley Carew doubled his side`s lead seven minutes before the break, and although Neil Barrett reduced the arrears just past the hour-mark, Carew`s second from the spot after 74 minutes sealed the points for Hamlet.

Canvey Island moved into the top five after winning 2-1 at the Harry Abrahams Stadium against falling Wingate & Finchley.

It was the hosts who drew first blood when Ahmet Rifat broke the deadlock nine minutes into the second period. Richard Halle equalised after 71 minutes and then Martin Tuohy grabbed the Gulls` winner in the final minute of normal time.

Needham Market and VCD Athletic remain second bottom and bottom respectively and also still win-less.

The Marketmen were beaten 1-0 by a Brentwood Town side who moved up to seventh in the table, courtesy of Paul Goodacre`s early eighth minute goal.

VCD were beaten by the odd goal in five at home against improving Billericay Town.

Paul Vines gave the Vickers an 11th minute lead that the in-form Mike Fondop Talom cancelled out after 24 minutes. Teddy Nesbitt then put Town in front on 67 minutes, only for the experienced Vines to equalise three minutes later. But Craig Edwards` side won it with a second for Fondop Talom six minutes from time.

There was a shock for now fourth-placed Harrow Borough as they were beaten in the north London derby by Enfield Town at Earlsmead.

Two goals in a minute just before half-time brought the game to life, with Darnell Wynter putting Town in front and then Conner French immediately cancelling that out. But nine minutes from time sub Samir Bihmoutine popped up with Town`s winner.

Tuesday`s other dame saw Staines Town and Burgess Hill Town share a 2-2 Wheatsheaf Park draw.

Pat Harding gave the Hillians a 14th minute lead that Pat Cox eventually levelled 11 minutes into the second half. Luke Wainadio then gave the Swans a 73rd minute advantage that sub Phil Johnson then cancelled out seven minutes later.
