Maidstone United narrowed the gap on Ryman Premier leaders Margate to five points with four games still in hand after beating Leatherhead 2-1 on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of a crowd of 1,094 on a cold and windy night at the Gallagher Stadium, the Stones got off to a great start when Jay May put them in front inside the opening minute. Jamie Coyle eventually doubled the high-flyers lead six minutes into the second half before Vasieleious Karagiannis reduced the arrears on the hour-mark to make for a nervy final period.

Dulwich Hamlet remain three points behind Maidstone in third after a 2-0 win against Tonbridge Angels at Champion Hill.

A crowd of 421 saw Ashley Carew give Hamlet an 18th minute lead from the penalty spot. And then right on half-time Omar Koroma added a second, which eventually proved to be enough.

There was another crucial game at the opposite end of the table where AFC Hornchurch entertained Essex rivals Witham Town.

And a 2-1 win for the Urchins moved them up a place to third-bottom, but now only two points behind nineteenth-placed Witham who, however, possess four games in hand.

Michael Malcolm gave the Urchins a 25th minute lead that only lasted eight minutes as Ellis Brown levelled from the penalty spot. But 15 minutes from time, top scorer George Purcell grabbed a vital three points for Hornchurch.

Tuesday's other game saw inconsistent Hampton & Richmond Borough go down to a 3-1 Beveree defeat to mid-table Peacehaven & Telscombe.

Joe Gatting gave the Sussex visitors a 12th minute lead that Ashley Jones eventually doubled just past the hour-mark. Ben Harris pulled the Beavers back into the game on 71 minutes but just six minutes later the visitors confirmed victory when Tom Burton added a third.
