Tuesday's Ryman Premier action review

Ryman League Premier Division

There were four matches in the Ryman League Premier Division on Tuesday night, and all of them involved teams in the battle to avoid the drop, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And the only side to obtain a point were nineteenth-placed Hampton & Richmond Borough, who moved five points clear of the drop zone after sharing a 1-1 draw at the Beveree with play-off chasing Bognor Regis Town.

The game looked to be heading for a goalless draw, until, with just 3 minutes of normal time remaining, Hampton broke the deadlock when Jerome Federico’s cross was forced home by Moussa Diarra through a crowded six-yard box. It looked like being a massive goal for the Beavers, but three minutes later a free-kick from Jake Thomson fell invitingly for Dan Sackman to head home the equaliser.

Enfield Town moved to within a point of fifth-placed Metropolitan Police after a 2-1 success at fourth-bottom Witham Town.

Tyler Campbell gave the visitors an 11th minute lead when, after he had his first shot blocked, superbly volleyed the rebound in to the top corner past Martyn Guest in the Witham goal. The hosts equalised right on half-time when Tom Wraight netted following a rebound after a good save from Nathan McDonald.

A draw looked on the cards – and the point would have moved the Essex side to within a point of the safety-mark – but on 88 minutes Michael Kalu side-footed home from 10 yards to win it for Enfield.

The team immediately above Witham, AFC Hornchurch, also suffered a home defeat on Tuesday.

They hosted a Lewes outfit who were in trouble themselves until a recent run of decent results under interim boss Steve Brown – interrupted last Saturday by defeat at leaders Maidstone United – has lifted them out of the danger zone.

Things couldn't have been worse for the Urchins, who fell behind after less than three minutes when Jack Rowe-Hurst`s 25-yard cross-cum-shot went in past Sam Mott. And the hosts lost Junior Luke to a straight red card on the half-hour mark for a bad challenge on Tom Davis.

Lewes safely saw out the rest of the game to leave the Urchins just two points in front of the bottom four, while the Rooks are now eight points clear of the drop zone.

Second-bottom VCD Athletic were also beaten at home by mid-table Grays Athletic.

The hosts had the better of the majority of the opening half, but were unable to find the breakthrough. Crucially it was the Blues who made that berakthrough, right on the stroke of half-time, courtesy of Dumebi Dumaka.

Nick Reeves gave the Vickers hope when he equalised after 67 minutes but Grays won it eight minutes from the end with a goal from Kenny Beaney.
