Up for the Cup!

By Ian Townsend

Almost all of our sides from Step Four are involved in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. Here’s what’s occurring (please say that in a Barry Island accent).

Ashford Town (Middx) host Knaphill, former home of Tangerines manager Luke Tuffs. Town will hope to bounce back from defeat last weekend, whilst the visitors, of the Combined Counties Premier, have started the campaign with a collection of draws- and defeated Lordswood on penalties in the last round.

Another Combined Counties club, Badshot Lee, host Corinthian. They’ve defeated Camberley Town and demolished Molesey seven-nil during the last week, and defeated East Preston in the last round. Corinthian made a very positive start to life in the Pitching In Isthmian League last weekend and will hope to continue the same way- but it’s unlikely to be easy for them.

Barking have a local derby, as they host Ilford. The visitors defeated Sporting Bengal in midweek, whilst the Blues were imperious in hammering Hullbridge Sports four-nil last weekend.

Basildon United walloped Stansted in the last round, whilst opponents White Ensign lost at Redbridge in midweek and had their first league match called off after Ilford were struck down by covid. They defeated Sporting Bengal in the last round.

Basingstoke Town started their Pitching In Isthmian life with a win over Binfield last weekend, whilst opponents AFC Totton, of Pitching In Southern League Division One South, have six points out of six with two one-nil victories. The two last met in the League in October of last year, AFC Totton leaving with a three-two victory.

Bearsted defeated Banstead Athletic two-one in midweek to earn a tie against Burgess Hill Town, who will be looking to get back to wining ways, whilst Combined Counties side Beckenham Town, who defeated Colliers Wood United in the last round and walloped Farnham Town four-nil in midweek, host our Pitching In Isthmian South East title favourites Hastings United.

Bedfont Sports host Herne Bay in what looks a well-matched all-Isthmian tie, whilst Bracknell Town host Bashley at Bashley! The Wessex League side defeated Bournemouth Poppies two-nil in midweek and indeed have won all three of their league matches so far, scoring seven goals and conceding only one.

Brentwood Town host Leighton Town at the Arena, the visitors of the Spartan South Midlands League. The visiting town won three-two at New Salamis last weekend after being two-nil down at half time, whilst the defeated Clacton in the last round. Our Town won impressively at Tilbury last weekend and will be full of confidence going into this one.

Canvey Island will be looking to emulate last season’s cup run, and old friends Waltham Abbey will be trying to stop them. The Abbotts have won one and lost one in their Southern League campaign so far, whilst our Gulls started the campaign with a draw at Stowmarket Town.

Ashford United travel to Chatham Town of the SCEFL. Chatham Town walloped Eastbourne United six-two in the last round and defeated Bearsted in the League last weekend, whilst the Nuts and Bolts were defeating Burgess Hill Town due to a Tommie Fagg hat trick.

South Central Chipstead host South East Faversham Town, whilst AFC Sudbury head to the end of the Piccadilly Line to take on Cockfosters, who have won two, drawn two and lost one of their five Essex Senior League fixtures so far.

Dereham Town will look to kick on from their excellent start to the season as they travel to Cogenhoe United of the United Counties League Premier South. Their hosts have won one and lost one of their matches so far. Coggeshall Town host Berkhamsted, leaders of Pitching In Southern League Division One Central, who have won both their matches so far this season scoring eight goals without reply.

Bury Town are heading to Fakenham Town, newly promoted to the Thurlow Nunn Premier where they are currently fifteenth, having just won their first match after losing the first three, whilst Felixstowe & Walton United host Southend Manor of the Essex Senior League, who lost four-nil at Stanway Rovers in midweek- although Rovers are top of the table, and Manor are twelfth.

Great Wakering Rovers host Heybridge Swifts in an all-Pitching In Isthmian North encounter with both looking to bounce back from opening day defeats, whilst Hanwell Town host another Essex Senior side, Athletic Newham, who are one place below Southend Manor having played one match fewer. Athletic lost six-three to Takeley in midweek.

Binfield travel to Harefield United of the Spartan South Midlands League, who have drawn both of their league matches so far, whilst Ramsgate head to Hollands & Blair, who have made a slow start to their SCEFL campaign but who defeated Holmesdale three-nil in the last round.

Hythe Town welcome Westfield in another all-Isthmian bash, the hosts looking for a first victory whilst the visitors walloped Tooting & Mitcham Utd three-nil last weekend, whilst we have an all South East and all Sussex bash at Culver Road where Lancing host Haywards Heath Town, with the two having dramatically different results on the opening weekend. The hosts will hope to immediately bounce back.

Chertsey Town travel to Lingfield- although they don’t, because Lingfield are playing at Church Road, former home of our lamented Whyteleafe. The hosts lost at Crawley Down Gatwick in midweek, but would have probably defeated Bexhill United last weekend had the floodlights not failed with them three-nil up and fifteen minutes remaining.

Longlevens host Chalfont St Peter. The hosts defeated Westfields three-nil in midweek, and are currently in fifth place in the Hellenic League Premier Division.

We have an early clash of the North Division promotion heavyweights as Maldon & Tiptree host Aveley, whilst Marlow will try to follow up their victory on the opening day as they host Slimbridge, fifteenth in Southern League South after losing their opener last weekend.

Tilbury will look to bounce back from opening day misery as they travel to North Greenford United of Combined Counties Premier North, who sit in seventh place with one win, one draw and one defeat.

Northwood host Burnham, undefeated in Combined Counties Premier North (although having only played twice), whilst Phoenix Sports host Punjab United, who have lost their last three matches in the SCEFL and sit fourteenth.

VCD Athletic travel to Raynes Park Vale, who have played three matches so far, scoring ten goals and conceding none- so perhaps shouldn’t be underestimated! Sevenoaks Town host SCEFL side Erith Town, who have won two and lost two of their four league matches so far, whilst Sittingbourne will look to follow up their fabulous opening day win against Lancing by welcoming another Sussex side, Littlehampton Town, to Woodstock Park. Town have won four of their five matches so far this season, and are scoring goals for fun- twenty three so far!

South Park host Three Bridges in another all-Isthmian tie, whilst Sutton Common Rovers travel to Steyning Town Community of the SCFL, who sit eighth after winning their last two matches.

Stowmarket Town host Witham Town in an all-Isthmian North clash, whilst Thatcham Town travel to Thame United, who sit sixteenth in Southern League Division One Central.

Uxbridge host Cray Valley PM, who will be hoping to repeat last season’s FA Cup heroics, whilst Hullbridge Sports will hope to bounce back from opening day defeat as they travel to Walthamstow- but it won’t be easy, as their hosts have won every match so far this season, scoring sixteen- an average of four a game- and conceding three.

Ware, our old favourites who these days are in the Southern League, host new favourites Hashtag United, whilst Whitstable Town welcome Alfold, conquerors of East Grinstead Town in the last round and currently in fourth place in the SCFL.
