Wednesday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

Bottom-markers Lewes recorded only their third win of the season to date on Wednesday night in the Ryman Premier Division, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Rooks beat Merstham 1-0 at the Dripping Pan in front of a crowd of 314, courtesy of a last-minute effort from Trevor McCreadie after good work by substitute Alex Laing. However, Lewes are still fourteen points adrift of fifth-bottom Needham Market.

In the evening`s other game, Leatherhead sunk Staines Town, who suffered a fifth defeat in six matches, while in contrast, this was the Tanners` fourth successive win under new boss Mike Sandmann.

Leatherhead got off to the perfect start when Staines` Jack Hutchinson was adjudged to have handled in the box. New loanee signing Frankie Collin stepped up to convert the resulting penalty.

The hosts eventually doubled their advantage 10 minutes into the second half when Kiernan Hughes-Mason curled in a lovely effort from 20 yards. And the Tanners made it 3-0 with seven minutes to go when Hughes-Mason`s cross was inadvertently turned into his own net by Jack Bennett.
