Williams quits Rams to return

By David Watters

Antony Williams will be guiding Chipstead in Ryman South next season after being named as the successor to Craig Tanner.

Williams, pictured, was named on Friday after standing down as the manager of AFC Croydon to replace former Tooting & Mitcham United boss Tanner.

Tanner, pictured below, was the Surrey club’s third manager last season and left last week after securing their Ryman League status, lifting them to 21st place finish since taking over in November with the club ten points adrift of safety.

His successor has a proven track record at The Mayfield Stadium, Williams winning promotion and two cups during his four years guiding the club in the Combined Counties League and last season in the Southern Counties East League after taking them up as runners-up.

In total, Williams was at the helm of the Rams for 166 games, posting a record 96 wins and 17 draws before walking away on Thursday to step up in to Ryman League management having secured a respectable eleventh-place finish in their first season at a higher level.

The new Chips boss might have his work cut out this summer to turn around their fortunes but he knows the club well having kicked off his career there as a youth player before going on to make more than 200 senior appearances, many of them as a member of their promotion winning side of 2006-07.

In a brief statement confirming his appointment, a club spokesman said: “Chipstead are delighted to announce the appointment of Antony Williams as first team manager."
