Worthing and Ware win five-goal thrillers on washout Tuesday

By Ian Townsend

Merstham pick up first win in months, and Bedfont Sports continue to climb. It's our round up.

Most of the football we had planned for yesterday disappeared under a deluge, but what we had left certainly didn't disappoint.

In the Premier Division, Worthing roared into a two goal lead against Enfield Town with two goals in the first ten minutes, Reece Myles-Meekums and Ollie Pearce leaving the Towners shellshocked. The visitors did rouse themselves, however, and two goals from Muhammadu Faal- his twenty first and twenty second goals of the season- drew them level, the first coming from the spot, the second twelve minutes after the break. Just when the match seemed to be heading towards a shared outcome, Joel Colbran popped up with a winner for the home side with six minutes to go- a result which sees the Mackerel Men end the day in second place, but behind Folkestone Invicta only on goal difference.

Up the A23 in Merstham, the Moatsiders were hosting Haringey Borough and looking for their first league victory since September 14th. It's been a long three months for the Moatsiders, but they'll be facing a far more positive Christmas after a goal fifteen minutes from time through Shola Ayoola saw them climb out of the bottom two and end the day in nineteenth. Borough are thirteenth.

Into the South Central Division now, and Ware closed to within a point of leaders Hanwell Town by winning their game in hand over the Geordies. They had to work hard for the points, however, as they travelled to Marlow and left with a three-two victory. David Kendall put the visiting blues ahead in the first half, and Liam Hope gave them a two goal cushion six minutes after the restart. That sparked Marlow to life, and Chris Ovenden reduced the arrears seven minutes later, but Harry Watson was able to restore the two goal cushion fifteen minutes from time. Nnamdi Nwachuku made the closing stages rather nervy for the visitors when he pulled it back to two-three, but Ware held on for victory.

A goal from Ezekiel Bademosi- his fifth in the last four matches- was the only one of the game as Bedfont Sports moved up to ninth place with victory over Harlow Town. Our former leaders, the Hawks have now gone eight matches in all competitions without a victory, and now sit only one place above their hosts.

In the Velocity Trophy, Horsham progressed to the next round of the competition with a one-nil home win over Whyteleafe. The goal came early, Jerry O'Sullivan emerging from the fog to score in the twelfth minute.

Tonight Bracknell Town host Hornchurch in the Velocity Trophy- and that should go ahead even if it continues to rain, as the Robins play on 3G.
