Leiston lead, Canvey consolidate, whilst Rooks revive to rule the roost

By Ian Townsend

A dramatic day saw new leaders of the Bostik Premier- whilst North and South Division leaders remain on top

On a day when Billericay Town were on FA Cup duty, still unbeaten Leiston showed their class to leap ahead and top the table. Glenn Driver's men were made to work hard for the points at injury and suspension ravaged Dorking Wanderers, but two second half goals from Patrick Brothers and Joe Marsden took them to the summit. Billericay, in second place, were joined on 24 points by Hendon, who avenged their opening day defeat to Tonbridge Angels by taking all three points due to a last minute Niko Muir spot kick, and by Dulwich Hamlet, who were held 1-1 at Staines Town.

At the other end of the table, Worthing were finally back at Woodside Road and were 2-1 up against Metropolitan Police with four minutes to go, before finding themselves 3-2 down only three minutes later. A penalty from Kieron Pammant earned them a point in added time in front of the League's highest crowd of the day, 855. The two sides above Worthing, Tooting & Mitcham United and Harlow Town, both won their matches- the Terrors winning 3-0 at managerless Brighlingsea Regent whilst Harlow defeated fifth place Harrow Borough 2-1.

In the North Division Canvey Island held on to top spot in some style, winning 3-1 at Witham Town, whilst AFC Hornchurch got back to winning ways after an uncharacteristically sloppy last few games, beating Bowers & Pitsea by a solitary goal to end the day two points behind the Islanders. Dereham Town and third, 3-1 winners over the Scholars of Potters Bar, whilst Bury Town remain in sixth despite a loss to now seventh place Maldon & Tiptree.

South Division leaders Lewes had an uncharacteristically sloppy first half at VCD Athletic, going in at the interval a goal behind, but Billy Medlock hit a second half double to leave the Rooks still unbeaten and still at the summit. Sittingbourne are second after a 4-0 victory at Shoreham, and Whyteleafe slip to third after defeat at Hythe Town. Greenwich Borough moved up to fourth with a hard fought 2-1 victory over South Park, whilst Cray Wanderers continued their fine form, going 4-0 up at home to Corinthian Casuals before conceding two goals in a spirited but ultimately futile fightback.
