A remarkable night in the FA Cup

By Ian Townsend

Kingstonian hit eight, Sports march on, and Sevenoaks turn a three goal lead into defeat

We had a rather remarkable night last night, as three of our clubs faced FA Cup First Qualifying Round replays. Two of them triumphed, one of them comprehensively, whilst the other managed to somehow turn triumph into disaster.

We're going to start with the good news, and we are going to start in the Royal Borough of Kingston, where Kingstonian were hosting Oxhey Jets. The K's may have been welcoming off the field, but they weren't very welcoming off it- although at half time the tie was still finely poised, with the hosts one goal to the good, Gus Sow with it two minutes before the break.

After the break, however, the two hundred ands fifty one in attendance got more than their money's worth, as Kingstonian rattled in seven goals- and jets got one, too, making it eight in forty five minutes and nine for the match. Daniel Ajakaiye got a hat trick, Elliot Buchanan grabbed a couple, Jason Banton scored a penalty, and Rhys Murrell-Williamson got number eight just before the end. By the way, keeper Rob Tolfrey made his five hundred and fifty seventh appearance for the club- and if he's picked on Saturday against Brightlingsea Regent will become the club's record appearance holder. A much deserved accolade!

Here's boss Hayden Bird's reflections on a good night's work.

A goal in each half from Lewis Flatman gave Bedfont Sports a comfortable two-nil win over Spelthorne Sports, whilst something rather incomprehensible happened at Sevenoaks. Scoreboard image: Tony Louki.

Town soared into a three-nil half time lead over Redhill, Brad Schafer, Louis Collins and Jason Thompson surely making them more than comfortable. Perhaps, however, they got rather too comfortable, as the visiting Combined Counties side managed four goals in the second half, including three in the last thirteen minutes, to complete a rather remarkable turnaround.
