AB1 Golden Gloves Awards- March 2023

By Ian Townsend

It’s time to consign March to the back of the net, but in doing so let’s honour some people who let very little else in there!

It’s time to recognise our best defences of March! Please note, the outcomes are all calculated on statistics in league matches.

Premier Division

We went to Aveley last month, and it seems we’re back there once more, because keeper Jonathan North continues to believe that “none shall pass!” The title chasing Millers had another fine unbeaten Pitching In Isthmian Premier month, which seems to be becoming something of a habit, and also kept clean sheets against Margate and Carshalton Athletic. By the way, the last time they conceded more than one goal in a league match? Tuesday December 20th! If ever a side’s success was built on their defence, this is the one.

Congratulations to Jonathan, and to all those who stand in front of him.

North Division

It’s a Stowmarket Town hat trick! We’ve already headed in that direction twice this morning as the club picked up our Manager and Performance awards, and now we’re there again, commending them on having a parsimonious defence. March saw Stow win every match, and deliver clean sheets against AFC Sudbury and Maldon and Tiptree. Even Hashtag United, who were on the longest winning run in the country, managed only one goal in falling to defeat. Many congratulations to James Bradbrook, the man behind the Stow back four, on a magnificent month between the sticks.

South Central Division

Marlow had a fine March, playing six times, remaining unbeaten, and delivering four clean sheets. They had two goalkeepers during the month, Montel Joseph keeping the net empty in matches against Chipstead, Westfield and Hanworth Villa- whilst Aaron Watkins was the owner of an empty net for the match against Tooting & Mitcham United. Many congratulations to both keepers on a fabulous month.

South East Division

Whitehawk found March very much to their liking. Burgess Hill Town, Chatham Town and Cray Valley PM were defeated to nil, whilst Sevenoaks Town did manage a goal, the only goal the Hawks conceded all month, but it didn’t help much as the Hawks scored three!

Sam Freeman was the man with the plan for the wins over the Hillians and the Oaks, Luke Glover for the wins over the Millers and the Chats. Perhaps they should have one glove each?! Whatever the club decides, many congratulations to both keepers- and to those who demonstrate fine defensive abilities in front of them.

Thanks to AB1 Goalkeeping for being our sponsors. You can take a look at their magnificent products- and they don’t just sell gloves- by heading HERE.

Premier League winner and international goalkeeper Asmir Begovic will be best known for his work between the posts, particularly for Stoke City, Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth.
