AB1 Golden Gloves Awards- October 2022

By Ian Townsend

It’s time to consign October to the back of the net, but in doing so let’s honour some people who let very little else in there!

It’s time to recognise our best defences of October- and, unusually, there are five of them! Please note, the outcomes are all calculated on statistics in league matches.

Here are the winners of our latest Golden Gloves Awards, sponsored by the fabulous folks at AB1 Goalkeeping

Premier Division

Once more we lead with the story of the Blues, visiting Bishop’s Stortford. The Blues are having a fine season, greatly helped by their parsimonious defence, and October saw them keep four clean sheets (five if we count cup competitions, which we don’t, but it still deserves a mention). Jack Giddens is their main man, so congrats go to Jack and all those who stand steadfastly in front of him.

North Division

The North Division has two winners, rather unusually.

We start at AFC Sudbury, still unbeaten as we write, who- after going a month and a half without a league match- crammed in five during October, took thirteen points, and delivered a clean sheet in three of them. David Hughes kept goal for three of those matches, Alfie Strong the first two, so perhaps they’ll get a glove each? Anyway, congratulations to the Yellows- and congratulations also go to the Rocks, as East Thurrock United share this prize. The Rocks also managed to cram in five league matches in October, and they also took thirteen points, whilst also- you’ve probably guessed by now- keeping three clean sheets. Montel Joseph took on all the keeping duties during this period, and deserves our plaudits- and a lovely pair of gloves.

South Central Division

We’re off to Woking Park once more, to bestow more honours on Westfield. October saw them take ten points from twelve, keep two clean sheets, and climb to a spot just outside the top five- and with games in hand, too. Sonny Wheeler has played an enormous part in an extremely successful month, and he’s about to have another fabulous pair of gloves to remember it by.

South East Division

We’re off to the More Than Tyres Stadium in the heart of rainy Mid-Sussex, but all that water didn’t stop Burgess Hill Town from keeping three clean sheets during October. Three wins and a draw saw them climb the table, and they conceded only one goal all month (in a match where they scored four of their own). Alfie Jones, Finley Jenkin and Taylor Seymour all kept goal during that period (no, not at the same time, although it would explain a lot), so we’ve no idea how they will decide who gets the gloves, but many congratulations- also to their defence, who it seems had confidence in every keeper!

Thanks to AB1 Goalkeeping for being our sponsors. You can take a look at their magnificent products- and they don’t just sell gloves- by heading HERE.

Premier League winner and international goalkeeper Asmir Begovic will be best known for his work between the posts, particularly for Stoke City, Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth. But he also has his own company- AB1 Goalkeeping- who provide magnificent products for discerning goalkeepers everywhere- and we are lucky enough to have them as sponsors of our Golden Gloves Award. As they explain:

'AB1 Goalkeeping was the brainchild of one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers, Asmir Begovic.
