Ambers start hunt to replace Faulkner

Cheshunt expect to name their new manager within days following Tony Faulkner's departure from the Ryman League's Ambers on Tuesday.

Faulkner, pictured, who took over towards the end of the season before last and led the Ambers to a 12th place finish in Ryman North last term, stood down following talks with Chairman Dean Williamson.

The Ambers have struggled to turn possession into points this season despite high hopes of securing a play-off spot. Faulkner left with the club fourth from bottom after Bank Holiday Monday's 1-1 draw at home to rock bottom Ware.

Williamson said: "We've had a disappointing start to the season and certainly not one we were hoping for. It's been frustrating for me and I know it's been frustrating for Tony. The club would like to thank Tony for his time in charge and we wish him all the very best for the future. We have a tough FA Cup fixture on Saturday, a capable squad and we have to get the players prepared for the game."

Only last week Faulkner brought in former Arsenal striker Omer Riza as a player/assistant manager after the Ambers took just four points from their opening six fixtures.

Following his exit, Faulkner told the Hertfordshire Mercury that while he was preparing to resign, the decision had been mutual in the end.

Faulkner said: "I have been frustrated with results and was going to resign at the end of last season, but my enthusiasm got the best of me and I carried on. I guess it was mutual. I had written my resignation letter and was going to hand it in on Thursday. Then Dean called and we did it there and then. I wish them all the best and go with my head held high."

Cheshunt players have showed their support for Faulkner and expressed their disappointment at his exit on Twitter. Skipper Max Mitchell tweeted: "Good luck to the man I've played for throughout my whole Non-League period @thegaffaa there's only one Tony Faulkner."
