Awards night rocks Wembley!

By David Watters

Coldplay were warming their vocal chords just yards away but the Ryman League's always-sensational banquet and ball was where it was really rocking at Wembley last weekend, writes Sam Elliott.

Chris Martin and Co were belting out Paradise, Yellow and Viva La Vida - but it was more a case of Viva La Beaver at the annual awards at the glitzy Hilton right next door.

Hampton and Richmond Borough enjoyed their night, one of many to get their hands on the season's silverware and honours.

The Ryman Premier champions held on to secure the title in the most tense of final days. They were, in truth, battered by play-off hunting Enfield on the last day but refused to let their grip on the championship go and took the deserved point they needed.

"I think I may sleep with the trophy in my bed!" joked Alan Dowson, the Hampton boss, who also collected the Ryman Premier's manager of the year accolade after his side held off Bognor's impressive late surge.

His chairman, Steve McPherson, added: "We couldn't even dream about this a year ago. We had just come off a poor season, Dowse had been forced to make some big changes and people weren't happy.

"We thought the top five might be possible, potentially. That was the target so to win the league? It still takes some believing."

There were cheers all round as the season's other champions were honoured. Folkestone Invicta boss Neil Cugley collected the club's Ryman South championship trophy and also left with a special achievement award after celebrating his 1000th game in charge of the Kent club last season.

"It's an honour and a fantastic privilege," said Cugley. "It was a complete surprise to me but I'm so thankful. It has been a memorable couple of months to say the least."

The night was hosted by actor-turned-broadcaster Tom Watt, who agreed to take on the role as long as his fee was given to charity.

After being presented with his side's Ryman North silverware by Ryman League chairman Nick Robinson, AFC Sudbury's manager of the year Jamie Godbold hailed a "fantastic season and a fantastic squad".

There were laughs aplenty in between the awards from co-host Bob 'The Cat' Bevan. Despite some being at his expense, Ryman League chairman Nick Robinson was delighted with the evening and the chance it offered to present title sponsors Ryman with a plaque for their headquarters in Wimbledon marking a partnership about to enter its 20th season in August.

After confirming that plans were well underway to introduce balls carrying '20' on them next season to mark the stationer's backing, he said: "We felt we had to honour our 20th season as partners and we can't wait to kick off with the new balls in August."
