Ball unveiled as new manager

By David Watters

Former Leiston, Clacton and Stanway Rovers boss Steve Ball is the new manager of Ryman North Maldon & Tiptree.

Ball, pictured, was unveiled by the Jammers as their third manager of the season on Tuesday, a week after David Wright left Park Drive before Christmas to become Kevin Keen's new number two at Colchester United.

Appointed in the summer as the successor to Kevin Watson, former Ipswich Town and U's defender Wright, pictured below, left with the club 14th in the table with ten wins and ten defeats from 25 outings. As caretaker, his number two Liam Bailey guided the Jammers to a 4-4 draw at home to Tilbury on Boxing Day.

Ball, 46, won the FA Youth Cup with Arsenal before turning out for Colchester United, Norwich City and Cambridge United. In Non-League he spent two years at AFC Sudbury before playing for Long Melford and local rivals Heybridge Swifts, his first opponents as Jammers manager on Saturday.

Now a full-time academy coach at Colchester, a role club officials say he will continue at the League One club, Ball stood down at Leiston's Victory Road in October 2014 after managing Stanway Rovers from 1998 to 2003.
