Christmas Monday's Ryman North review

By David Watters

There were four matches in Ryman North on Christmas Monday and all produced away wins, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The biggest winners were third-placed AFC Hornchurch, who moved to within four points of leaders Cray Wanderers after a 5-0 demolition of Great Wakering Rovers at Burrough`s Park.

Alex Bentley gave the Urchins a seventh minute lead that David Knight doubled 10 minutes later. Eleven minutes into the second period and George Purcell made it 3-0 and 10 minutes from time he added his second and the visitors` fourth, with Bentley matching him in the 87th minute.

Harlow Town moved up to seventh in the table after beating second-bottom Redbridge 1-0 at the Oakside Stadium, Junior Dadson scoring the all-important goal for the Hawks in the ninth minute.

Thamesmead Town will go into the New Year also looking upwards at the top five after a 2-0 win at Mill Field against Aveley left them just four points behind fifth-placed Cheshunt.

Richard Butler gave Mead a 58th minute breakthrough from the penalty spot and just three minutes later, much-travelled striker Paul Vines doubled their advantage.

Monday`s other game was a basement battle between third-bottom Barkingside and a Haringey Borough side who started the day just above their hosts. They ended it four points clear though, courtesy of Ishmail Kamara`s goal on the hour-mark.
