BetVictor Isthmian League- supporters predictions 2019/20: Lewes.

By Ian Townsend

Back to the Premier Division. It’s time to head to the Dripping Pan, and visit Lewes FC.

We asked supporters of our BetVictor Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. Their predicted 1-20 (or 22) will be worked into a final table which you will see just before the big kick off.

Alec Foord is one of a select band of Lewes fans who were there when Brinky scored. He’s probably got a t-shirt with that on the front of it.

1. What was your favourite moment of last season?

Well that is a hard question, however I think it has to be the 4-3 Derby win at Worthing back in January. Although 5-1 at Hornchurch after a bad run deserves a mention, as does our first win at title winners Dorking Wanderers (Dorking’s first home loss too).

2. And your worst moment?

I think it has to be the 4-3 defeat at home to Worthing. Being 3-2 up against ten men with ten or so minutes to go. To lose in a derby hurts, and it was years since the last league derby game between the sides. Losing at home to both Whitehawk and Burgess Hill was not good either.

3. How will you do this season?

I think we will probably finish where we did last season, mid-table, with hopefully more looking up than down. I would like a FA Cup run, too (ok we had 7 games last year, 3 draws!) maybe the 1st round again.

4. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

Well I look forward to the Sussex derbies, and I can’t wait to see Horsham’s new ground! And there are new grounds to visit- Bowers & Pitsea and Cheshunt.

5. What is your favourite away ground?

Well I can’t pick us! However I do have two trips I like making, Cray Wanderers and Wingate & Finchley. I really like Wingate’s stand, football one side and cricket, it reminds me of Headingley.

6. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?

Well as I’ve being following Lewes a long time, there are only two teams we really consider rivals. Worthing are the closest, and there have been over 100 games between the sides- and Horsham would be the other, we have some many ding-dongs over the years.

7. What advice would you give to any away supporter visiting you for the first time?

I’ve got three tips. The first is to check that Brighton aren’t at home, as if they are then Lewes is really busy with extra traffic, allow for that. The second is to come early and enjoy the pubs in the town, and our very own refurbished Rook Inn. And finally, as soon as you get through the turnstile look for our wonderful badge collection, all reasonably priced!

8. Who is your favourite player of all time (for your club)- and why?

As I’ve been at the Pan for a long time, It’s tough as we have had a lot of good players. I have to mention Dave Wheeler as a local boy, now playing in the Football League for Wycombe. And of the current boys, Steve Brinkhurst- I was one of a few that could say “I was there when Brinky scored” at Hornchurch.

9. Who will be in the top five at the end of the season?

Carshalton Athletic, Haringey Borough, Worthing, Bognor Regis Town, Folkestone Invicta.

Right, you've read Alec’s views, do you want to be next? If you'd like to represent your club, then please send an email to townsendaround@gmail.com and we shall see what we can do!
