Blues hit Borough for six, Towners flayed in Finchley, and the Mackerel Men extend their lead

By Ian Townsend

We had a rain-interrupted Tuesday night, but what survived was magical. Here’s our round up of a crucial night in the Pitching In Isthmian League

Bishop’s Stortford have been in terrific form, with only one defeat in twenty two league matches, and the quality of their season is perhaps exemplified by the fact that they won six-nil last night and that wasn’t even their best result of the campaign! It was, however, by some distance their best win on the road, and it left one Haringey Borough fan on social media calling for the season to be declared null and void at half time! His side were five-nil down by then, goals from Ryan Henshaw, Jon Giles, Darren Foxley and Chris Harris (2) leaving the Coles Park faithful downcast and the travelling hordes rather delighted. Stortford calmed down a little after the break and only added one more, Jack Thomas getting that seventeen minutes from time, but it takes them up to second place, six points behind Worthing- who coincidentally they face on Saturday.

By the way, that's twenty clean sheets in fifty appearances for Blues keeper Jack Giddens- a phenomenal return.

The Mackerel Men made it seven games unbeaten and stuck four past a Kingstonian side who have now taken only two points from their last fifteen. After a goalless forty minutes the next forty two minutes had four, the first two scored just before the break by Callum Kealey, Jasper Pattenden making it three with twenty two minutes remaining, and Reece Myles-Meekums sealing victory seven minutes from time. The K’s had Jerry Puemo dismissed fifteen minutes from time.

After five wins in a row Enfield Town have now lost their last two, and last night’s defeat was something of a massacre, the Towners taking a trip to Wingate & Finchley for a derby match and being crushed four-one. The Blues were three up by the break, Theo Ofori opening the scoring on seven minutes before Antonis Vasiliou weighed in with two; and although Rian Bray got one back six minutes after the restart, Dylan Kearney made quite sure with a fourth for the Blues eleven minutes from time. The Towners slip to third, the Blues are up to fourteenth.

Folkestone Invicta are back in the top five after a narrow win over Cray Wanderers. Adam Yusuff got the only goal two minutes before the break, and that turned out to be that. Wands remain in danger, fourth from bottom and having played two games more than the side they are ahead of only on goal difference, Brightlingsea Regent.

Margate are up to eighth after a two-nil win over Merstham. Vance Bola got the Blues underway with the opening goal just after the half hour- his fourteenth of the season- and a tight game was then settled by Ben Greenhalgh right at the end- a sixteenth of the campaign for him, this one after coming on from the bench a quarter of an hour earlier.

Horsham, two goals up in twenty minutes courtesy of Shamir Fenelon and Will Miles, then saw their pockets picked after the break. Visitors Carshalton Athletic saw Korrey Henry get his first goal for the club just before the hour mark, and nine minutes from time Brad Williams earned the Robins a point. Athletic are ten points off a play off berth, the Hornets another seven points further back.

We had but one match and one goal in the Pitching In Isthmian North Division, and it gave the points to Grays Athletic, whilst deepening the Barking gloom. It came after fifteen minutes and it went to Lewis Clark, whilst the Blues remain third from bottom, have only two wins from ten, and only one game in hand over the sides around them.

The story was similar in the Pitching In Isthmian South East, only the match we had there was between two promotion contenders, Haywards Heath Town and Ramsgate. The goal went to the hosts, and it saw them back into the top five. Kieron Rowe was the goalscorer, nine minutes after the break- a second of the season for the Heath number three, exactly a month after the first.
