Can Stoke and Marlow give their promotion chances a boost?

By Ian Townsend

We’ve two matches in the Pitching In Isthmian South Central tonight- and they could both be crucial come season’s end.

Basingstoke Town start this evening in fifth place, one point ahead of Uxbridge and four points ahead of Marlow- and three points behind Bedfont Sports and Hanwell Town, each of whom have played a game more. Victory over Guernsey tonight won’t take them any higher than the spot they start in, unless they can somehow triumph by twenty goals, but it will help them fend off the two sides on their tail!

Stoke fell to a surprise home hammering at the weekend, Sutton Common Rovers scoring three goals and leaving with three points, and the visiting Green Lions have been in good form, losing only three of their last ten. The last time the two met, Guernsey came from three-one and four two down to claim a point in an eight goal thriller.

Marlow are on the road to Ashford Town, who were Bracknell Town’s latest victims at the weekend, as our Champions made sure of their trophy. Four points behind Basingstoke, seven and eight points behind the sides in between fourth and second, if Marlow are to hold on to their play off aspirations you’d expect they’ll need to win tonight. They’ve only won three of their last ten, form which has allowed that gap to develop, but they did get back to winning ways at the weekend. Defeating Tooting & Mitcham United by the only goal.

The Tangerines have also won only three of their last ten, and have lost three of their last four. They start the day in thirteenth, seven points clear of danger- but they’ll undoubtedly want to get to confirmed safety as soon as possible.
