Chance to make a playing comeback!

Margate

Walking football, the slower-paced version of the beautiful game aimed at the over 50s, is heading to Margate thanks to a new initiative from the Ryman Premier club’s community scheme.

Leaflets announcing the kick-off of an initial 10 week programme in October were handed out to fans at Hartsdown Park on Tuesday night during the club’s 1-0 win over Maidstone United.

Walking Football is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle and socialise despite their age, as well as getting those back playing football who've had to stop due to injuries. As the name suggests, Walking Football is non-contact and anyone who sprints, runs or jogs while the ball is in play is penalised.

As part of their commitments to engaging with the local community by offering a range of sporting and social opportunities, club officials say the first of the new weekly sessions will take place from 6 to 7pm on Monday 13 October.

Walking football is not a new phenomenon and is already played at clubs and in leagues around the country including Bury Town who launched their own programme two years ago to help seniors get back into the game.
