Kane back in the hot-seat as caretaker

Nigel Kane will take Hastings United to Grays Athletic on Saturday in the FA Cup as caretaker manager in the wake of Terry White’s departure.

White, who succeeded John Maggs at the Arrows in January and led the Ryman South club to a fifth placed finish and the play-offs in May, tendered his resignation on Tuesday following Monday night’s 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Tooting & Mitcham United.

Their second home defeat in the space of little more than 48 hours left the Sussex club languishing in 16th spot in the table as they prepare for the weekend’s FA Cup Second Qualifying Round tie in Essex.

White oversaw an inconsistent start to the campaign before a six-match unbeaten run and Hastings United chairman Dave Walters is now inviting applications for the post at The Pilot Field after turning to Kane who managed United to play-off glory at the end of the 2006-07 campaign and was recently installed as assistant manager.

Known for his attention to detail and knowledge of the game, Kane was a United player before initially becoming joint manager alongside Pat Brown in December 2005. The Geordie assumed sole charge a few months later and left the club by mutual consent in December 2007.
