Charman falls on his sword at Hornets

Horsham

Former Middlesbrough midfielder Anthony Storey took temporary charge of Horsham on Saturday after Gary Charman stood down at the Ryman South club.

In a statement released by officials at the West Sussex club, the Hornets said their board had 'reluctantly' accepted the resignation of the player-manager, pictured.

Coaches Ian Varley and Mark Hawthorne also stood down from their positions as Charman's assistants with the club rooted to the bottom of the table after winning just four games all season.

Horsham chairman Kevin Borrett said: "Gary has been an integral part of this club from his earliest footballing days. He took over the club at a very difficult time and has had limited budget and resources to work with, though he still successfully consolidated our position at the end of last season after taking charge.

"Unfortunately, things have not worked out as well this season and whilst I have no doubt that Gary will be an effective and successful manager in the future, combining those responsibilities with still playing is a difficult balancing act.

"Gary remains an outstanding player and true gentleman, and I would not rule out his returning to a managerial role in the club at a future date. We are incredibly grateful for everything Gary has done, and he will always be respected and welcome at Horsham FC."

Horsham-born Charman replaced Simon Colbran in November 2013 some fifteen years after making the first of more than 550 appearances for his hometown club.
