Sittingbourne officials are looking forward to enhancing the Ryman South club's reputation for giving young managers a chance after Nick Davis returned as sole manager on Wednesday.

The central defender, pictured, was joint manager alongside the departed Mick Wyatt at Woodstock Park last season and left at the start of the current campaign to focus on his playing career at Tunbridge Wells in the Southern Counties East Football League.

In the statement announcing his appointment at lunchtime, Brickies officials said the 32-year-old intends to concentrate on his touchline role following his return to replace Wyatt.

Barry Crimmen, who stepped up to hold the fort over the last month, has agreed to stay on at the Kent club to work alongside Davis and will revert to his former role as assistant manager.

Davis has hundreds of games under his belt playing Ryman and Conference level football and Brickies secretary John Pitts is backing the club's track record of showing faith in young managers despite receiving applications from a record number of candidates for the post Wyatt vacated in early October.

Pitts said: "This was a difficult decision for the committee given the quality of many of those who applied among an unprecedented number of applicants.

"We have a history of giving a chance to new managers instead of those who have 'done the circuit'. In the past managers such as Mark Beeney, Garry Abbott and Richard Brady all had their first opportunity of being a manager with Sittingbourne Football Club."

Davis takes sole charge for first time on Saturday when the seventh-placed Brickies travel to Three Bridges in Ryman South action.
