Fingers crossed for Friday night football fever!

By David Watters

Ryman North leaders Aveley are hoping for third time lucky when they host AFC Hornchurch on Friday night in a top-of-the-table clash at the Mill Field.

After two previous attempts in recent seasons to boost their gates by opting to play on a Friday night were scuppered by the weather, the Millers are looking forward to giving it another go against the fourth-place Urchins when the sides meet in a competitive derby for the first time in nearly five years.

Aveley, who led the table on the opening day of the season with the first goal of the campaign against Bury before dropping to the bottom by the end of the afternoon after going down to a 5-1 reverse, slipped back into top spot on Bank Holiday Monday thanks to a 2-0 win over Thamesmead Town.

Officials at Mill Field are hoping to tempt supporters along to the 7.45pm kick-off after cutting their £9 regular admission price to launch their new Friday Football For A Fiver campaign this week.

A club spokesman said: "This is a great occasion for everyone to come to Mill Field and watch a massive game in the Ryman North for just five pounds. We're tried before to offer supporters something different and it should be a great night, barring another intervention by the weather!"
