Friday Night Football!

By Ian Townsend

Rather unusually, we’ve three matches in the Pitching In Isthmian League tonight. We’ll be covering one of them, but here’s a preview of all three.

We’ll be hitting the M25 and M11 (so long as they don’t hit back) and heading to Bishop’s Stortford in the Pitching In Isthmian Premier this evening, to watch the Blues host Cray Wanderers. The two met as recently as April 23rd, a three-one win for Stortford giving them a confidence boost as they prepared for a Play Off Semi-Final, whilst Wands stayed up by the skin of their teeth despite the defeat. The Blues did the double over their opponents last season, and also won the match between the two in the almost non-existent 20-21 campaign, but Wands will have fine memories of their trip here in September 2019, when they won five-one.

Wanderers picked up their first league win of the season last time out, defeating Canvey Island, whilst Stortford were suffering their first defeat, at Lewes.

Here’s what happened the last time the two met.

At the Kentish seaside, a newly-strengthened Margate welcome Horsham. The Blues will be looking for a spot of revenge; the last time the two met was in the Velocity Trophy Final last season, the Hornets picking up the silverware with a comprehensive four-nil win. Horsham did lose at Hartsdown Park in the League however, a late Lewis Knight goal giving the Blues victory on February 5th. The last time the Hornets won at Hartsdown Park was way back in 2009.

Margate have won only one of their three matches this season, and lost in Brightlingsea last time out. Horsham started the campaign brilliantly, and then came rather unstuck against Carshalton Athletic last weekend, losing three-one.

With apologies to the Blues, here's what happened in that last meeting.

Into the Pitching In Isthmian South Central next, and off to Ashford Town. The Tangerines have only taken one point from their two matches in the league, but have been much better in the cup, scoring thirteen goals in their three matches so far! Two one-nil wins in a row for opponents South Park Reigate - against Leatherhead and Chipstead- have seen them climb into the top three.

The two last met at the Robert Parker Stadium just after New Year, the Tangerines winning two-one. When they met at Whitehall Lane just before seasons end, however, the outcome was reversed, with the Sparks scoring the only goal of the game.

Their last seven meetings have seen four Tangerine dreams, two bright Sparks, and one draw.
