Guernsey shock the Saints

By Ian Townsend

Our Pitching In Isthmian South Central focus was at the bottom end of the table, where the Saints were undone, and Westfield drew- again. Here’s our brief round up.

Second bottom Chalfont St Peter have fallen six points behind Sutton Common Rovers, and were desperate to close that gap as Guernsey came to call- and they must have thought they’d succeeded. One-nil up with five minutes to go- a goal scored by Isaac Monene just before the half hour- both sides were later reduced to ten men, Jacob Fallaize marching off for the Green Lions on seventy one minutes and Fabien Ettience departing for the visitors seven minutes from time, All the Saints had to do was hold out- but they couldn’t quite do it. With five minutes to go a Green Lions penalty was converted by Ross Allen- his eighteenth goal in twenty three games this season- and then deep into added time Tom Strawbridge was the Guernsey Angel, popping up to fly all three points back to the Channel Islands and leaving the Saints wondering if they’d sinned.

Guernsey are up to thirteenth and still have games in hand over the sides around them, whilst Chalfont are still six points from safety but have now played a game more than the two sides above them.

Westfield are only two places above third bottom Sutton Common Rovers, and their Achilles heel this season has been an inability to turn one point into three. Last night, however, they almost got none! Right at the end of their match with Binfield, Sean Moore put the Moles ahead- but there was still, somehow, time for an equaliser, IK Hill bringing a little cheer to the home faithful.

That’s Westfield’s eleventh draw in twenty nine matches- and we should have expected that outcome, perhaps, as the side in second place in the ‘draw table’ are, of course, Binfield with nine.
