Happy 140 to Stow!

By Ian Townsend

Happy Birthday to Stowmarket Town- and don't you look good for your age!

Stowmarket Town are having a special celebration this weekend, to celebrate the fact that it is ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY YEARS since they played their first league match.

Back in the days when Krakatoa was about to erupt, Brooklyn Bridge was preparing for its opening ceremony and Gaudi was just starting his work on the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Stowmarket Association FC- as they were then known, after the amalgamation of Stowmarket St Peter and Stowmarket Ironworks- were preparing for their first ever match, against Needham Market School. Eastleigh, Prentice, Woods, Jordan, Thurlow, Gostling, Ashley, Harper, Earthy and G. Thurlow took to the field for Stow, and...well, we don't know how they did, as there doesn't seem to be any record of the score.

On Saturday the club will be inviting all comers to a special party to celebrate this milestone, with live music, food, drink and free entry. The band- who are called JAAG- will be playing from 8PM.

Congratulations to all at the club, and here's to the next one hundred and forty years.
