Hot-shot will be back after trek

By David Watters

Guernsey's hitman Ross Allen is hoping to sign off at Whyteleafe with an away goal to add to the Footes Lane strike he scored in Ryman South in midweek before setting off to travel around the world.

The record goalscorer at the Green Lions with 225 in 211 appearances netted his final goal in the Channel Islands in a 2-0 win over Chipstead on Wednesday night before leaving to travel around Asia, Australia and North America.

Ryman League defences haven't seen the last of the striker this season as he is due back in March and hoping to be as lethal as ever.

Speaking to BBC Guernsey after his 73rd minute strike, the 29-year-old said: "It was a great night to sign off. I'm going to miss it incredibly. Mentally and physically it will be a good rest and a chance for me to recharge the batteries, come back stronger and hopefully have another four or five years of Guernsey FC football."

He added: "I hope to keep up my fitness a bit while I'm away and push that towards March when I'm scheduled to come back, and have a good push for the last couple of months of the season going into the Muratti and Island Games."

Allen received a standing ovation from the Guernsey crowd, pictured above, and Guernsey boss Tony Vance said afterwards: "He's put his life on hold for six years and it was poignant that he got the applause he got. He deserved it for what he's given this football club, but he'll be back, there's no doubt about that - he's only going on an extended holiday."

He added: "A few of the lads were giving him some stick saying that they're going to go on holiday as well and see if they get a clap like that, but fair play to him and we'll look forward to him coming back."
