Invicta go top on Monsoon Saturday- and the Jammers win their fifteenth consecutive game.

By Ian Townsend

We also saw Tilbury score six, Enfield and Westfield score five, and a number of four goal hauls as the weather failed to spoil Non League Day.

This weekend marked the tenth annual ‘Non League Day’- a time when we try to attract those people for whom, unlike the rest of us, every day is NOT Non League Day! Many of our clubs had special offers, pay what you like deals and entertainment galore, but in truth, the main entertainment was always going to be that provided by twenty two men and a ball. Looking at the scorelines, we didn’t short- change any irregular visitors who came along.

Our table-toppers, Horsham, travelled to face a Bishop’s Stortford side who had lost five consecutive matches. The Blues gave a debut to new arrival- and former Margate man- Jordan Chiedozie- and he scored the opening goal of the match after seventy-three minutes. William Mycroft- Edwards got another five minutes from time, and the Hornets stay at the top of the table was ended, for now at least.

Our new leaders are former leaders, Folkestone Invicta taking over at the top after Keiron McCann got the only goal of the game at Corinthian-Casuals, whilst Hornchurch also leapfrogged Horsham to go second. The Urchins had to come from behind as they entertained Bowers and Pitsea, Max Cornhill scoring for the visitors just before the break, but a Chris Dickson penalty drew the home side level with twenty minutes left, and Matt Johnson got the winner for Hornchurch in the very last minute.

Cray Wanderers hadn’t lost a league match since the 14th August, but they were undone at Hayes Lane by a rampant Enfield Town. Muhammadu Faal got two for the Towners- that’s ten for the season- and Ken Charles also got two- that’s seven for him- whilst Joseph Payne made it five with twenty minutes to go. At this point Wands were five-one down, Joseph Taylor scoring for the home side, but Tom Murphy and Jay Leader made the scoreline a more respectable three-five before the end. Taylor, by the way, has now scored thirteen goals so far.

East Thurrock United are fifth, courtesy of a Mitchell Gilbey goal- the only one of the game as they hosted Lewes- whilst Haringey Borough, in sixth, also won one-nil. Margate were their victims at Coles Park, and Romoluwa Akinola got the goal.

Worthing travelled back from Cheshunt with three points, and moved up to seventh place in the table. Afolabi Akinyemi gave the Ambers the lead in the first half, but a Lloyd Dawes double after the break warmed up the travelling faithful.

A pulsating encounter in front of a crowd of seven hundred and nine at Colston Avenue saw Carshalton Athletic come from two goals down to draw with Kingstonian. Louie Theophanous put the visitors ahead in the first half, Reece Hall made it two just before the hour mark, and surely that was game over? It wasn’t, as Danny Dudley and Ricky Korboa were the Robins saviours. Athletic ended the day in eighth, the K’s in fourteenth.

Potters Bar Town are in ninth place, and unbeaten since August 24th. The Scholars warmed up for their FA Cup tie with Barnet next weekend- get your tickets now, by the way, they may well sell out- by travelling to the Sussex coast and walloping Bognor Regis Town, ending the recent Rocks revival rather comprehensively by scoring four goals without reply. They all came after the break, and Ben Ward-Cochrane got the first three, whilst Thomas Gogo got the fourth. Bognor only got wet.

Leatherhead’s form has had a dramatic upturn of late, and that continued when they travelled to Merstham yesterday, the Tanners getting four goals. Ibrahim Olutade gave them the lead, Tommy Wood made it two, and although Omar Folkes got one back from the spot it was three-one by the break, Travis Gregory with that one. Simon Mensah made sure in the second half, and Leatherhead climbed to twelfth.

A late Billy Hunt goal- is it always Billy Hunt, or does it just seem that way- gave managerless Brightlingsea Regent a point at home to Wingate & Finchley. Alan Fleming put the travelling Blues ahead after thirteen minutes, but they couldn’t quite hold on until the end, Hunt striking five minutes from time.

We’ve had one fixture in the South East Division as Three Bridges hosted Ramsgate- and you can read about it in detail HERE- and look at some pictures, including one of a fox with his nose in the air, as it was our featured match.

Ashford Town v Canvey Island 121019

Ashford Town v Canvey Island 121019

Now we’re off to the FA Trophy Preliminary Round. We’ll do that in alphabetical order, so that we don’t miss anything!

Ashford Town (Middx) hosted Canvey Island, and the visitors got off to the perfect start when Jason Hallett gave them a first minute lead- but they couldn’t hold on to it, the Tangerines getting two in the second half through Kelvin Adjei and Scott Todd. Kane Gilbert, however, thwarted Ashford’s hopes with an equaliser from the spot two minutes from time.

The other Ashford, United, were also at home to an Essex side- Witham Town- and a late goal also thwarted their hopes of victory. An own goal put Witham ahead in the first half, but a Jay May double put the Nuts and Bolts on course for the next round. Then in the very last minute Lewis Byrne-Hewitt levelled for the visitors.

Two goals from Ben Gorham mean that Sevenoaks Town will have to host Aylesbury United in a replay; but Barking won’t have to fly to Guernsey as a Michael Dixon goal six minutes from time gave them victory after Ross Allen had equalised an earlier Abs Seymour opener.

Uxbridge v Northwood 121019

Chichester City left the competition despite scoring two goals- both from Josh Clack- as hosts Barton Rovers had four by then, whilst the least said about Herne Bay’s trip to Berkhamsted the better, as they fell five-nil.

Brentwood Town and Basildon United also saw five goals, the hosts getting two of them and falling to eighty-ninth minute defeat. Adam Vyse got the opener for the Bees, Ayo Odukoya the second, but both times Town pegged them back through Michael Toner and Jason Williams. Kurt Smith got that winner.

Burgess Hill Town left the competition at the hands of fellow South East Division side Phoenix Sports, who got both goals of the match in the first half- Jack Hopkins and Kenny Alireu finding the net.

Goals from Sam Bell and Sam Page gave Chipstead victory over FC Romania, Lawrence Neuruba with the consolation, whilst the match between East Grinstead Town and Aveley was postponed.

Grays Athletic hosted Bedfont Sports, and it was their South Central visitors who left happy, Darryl Saunders, Nathan Wood and Keanu Williams giving them a three-nil victory.

Westfield seem to guarantee goals, and they got five at Great Wakering Rovers yesterday. Rovers also got three of their own, so the fans certainly weren’t short of entertainment. Aaron Watson got a hat trick for the visitors, Max Blackmore and Tinashe Nkoma the other two, whilst a Jake Gordon double and a goal from Jon Benton wasn’t enough for the home side, who saw Ollie Woodhouse dismissed just before the end.

Harry Rush got a double for Hanwell Town, but sadly AFC Dunstable got four, whilst a late winner scored by goalkeeper Luke Glover for Haywards Heath Town saw them defeat Bracknell Town at Hanbury Park. Byron Napper had earlier put Heath ahead, only for Dan Carr to equalise for the Robins.

Histon and Corby Town couldn’t find a goal between them, but Hythe Town and Hastings United managed three- and two of them came to United’s striker Ben Pope, who gave Hastings victory after Alex Flisher had opened the scoring for the hosts.

What more can we say about Maldon & Tiptree? The Jammers aren’t only undefeated this season but they’ve won every match, and victory over Cray Valley PM was win fifteen. Charlee Hughes got four goals- that’s sixteen for the season- and Jorome Slew got another (also sixteen in all competitions) as they walloped Cray five-two, Ashley Sains and Francis Babalola replying for the visitors. Here’s another fact- the Jammers have now scored five goals or more in four successive matches, and six times this season.

A Kevin Bossman penalty was the only goal of the game as Marlow defeated Chertsey Town, whilst Johan Caney-Bryan was the only goalscorer as Sittingbourne defeated South Park by the same scoreline.

Soham Town Rangers, however, got three at home to Bury Town, Tom Newman, Sam Mulready and Callum Russell with the goals in a three-nil victory. Jack Adlington-Pile got both of Heybridge Swifts’ goals as they defeated Staines Town two-nil at Wheatsheaf Park.

Tilbury were the biggest scorers of the day, although visitors Waltham Abbey won’t thank us for reminding them of that, as they were on the receiving end of six Dockers goals. Brian Moses got two of them, Oliver Spooner another two, whilst Darren Phillips and Calvin Ekpiteta got the others. Leonne McKenzie and Billy Holland replied for the Abbotts.

Uxbridge heaped more pain on managerless Northwood despite falling behind to an early Alex Witham goal. Callum Bunting, Alan Hedley, Jack Beadle and Mahlondo Martin then got four for the home side.

VCD Athletic hosted AFC Sudbury and took a fourth minute lead through Jack Steventon. They were behind by half time, however, Adam Bailey-Dennis and Joe Whight finding the Vickers net, and in the second half Tom Maycock and Sean Marks made it four-one to the yellows.

Whitehawk scored an own goal to give Romford the lead at the Enclosed Ground, but bounced back to win after the break, David Martin and Connor Tighe with the goals, whilst Whitstable Town and Ware will need to do it all again after a two-two draw. John Ufuah and Tijan Jadama scored for the Oysterboys, Olu Akinsanya got both for the visitors.

Tooting & Mitcham United got back to winning ways at Whyteleafe, two late Danny Bassett goals giving them victory after Ronald Sobowale had earlier equalised Jamarie Brissett’s opener.

In the Velocity Trophy Felixstowe and Walton United hosted Coggeshall Town, went two goals up- Miles Powell and Armani Schaar with them inside eleven minutes- conceded two- Ross Wall and Joshua Pollard with those- and then won the extra point with a 5-4 penalty shootout victory.

We have one match today, as Cambridge City host Market Drayton Town in the FA Trophy.

Where next?

Blues sign a former Blue Stortford bring in former Margate striker- and he scores immediately
Three Bridges. No Goals. A match between the two lowest scoring sides in the South East Division didn't promise to be a goalfest. That promise was kept.
