It's FA Cup Saturday!

By Ian Townsend

Nine of our clubs start in the FA Cup tomorrow, as competitive football returns. Here's a preview, with some stats courtesy of FA Cup Factfile.

We have nine clubs in FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round action tomorrow, three from the South Central Division, three from the North Division, and- you guessed it- three from the South East Division. We've teamed up with FA Cup Factfile, and their fabulous new book packed full of stats, FA Cup 150, to bring you a preview.

Harpenden Town V Romford

Town are in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier, and have never got beyond the 1st qualifying round. They've departed the competition in the Extra Preliminary Round twice in the last four seasons. Boro have only ever been knocked out once at this stage, last season, so will be striving not to make it two in a row.

Witham Town v Woodford Town

Woodford Town are in the Essex Senior League, and their best ever run is to the 1st qualifying round. They lost to Cockfosters as their league kicked off last weekend, but have had a good pre-season, defeating Romford and drawing with Hullbridge Sports.

Basildon United V Stansted

Essex Senior League Stansted won't be underestimated by the Bees, as they knocked them out of the competition at preliminary Round stage last season. Neither side have made it past Third Qualifying Round stage.

Staines Town v Little Common

Town have almost an entirely new team, and this will be their first competitive test. Southern Combination League Premier opponents Common have never got beyond the 1st qualifying round, but they did reach that stage in both of the last two campaigns. They walloped Pagham four-nil in their league opener last weekend,

Cobham v Sevenoaks Town

Combined Counties League Premier South side Cobham equaled their best ever FA Cup run last season, reaching the 1st qualifying round, whilst Oaks haven't departed the competition at this stage for more than five years, and made the 2nd Qualifying Round last season. The hosts drew 1-1 with AFC Croydon Athletic last weekend, and Oaks have had a positive pre-season, defeating South Park, Tonbridge Angels, Hollands & Blair and Canterbury City.

Ashford Town (Mdx) v AFC Uckfield Town

The Tangerines host a side from the Southern Combination League Premier. Uckfield have lost at this stage in three of the last five seasons, whilst the hosts have never left the competition at this stage. The visitors lost to Saltdean United last weekend, but given United are packed full of former Isthmian players that might not be a fair judgement on the visitors today.

East Grinstead Town v Alfold

Southern Combination League Premier Division Alfold travel down College Lane for only their second ever FA Cup campaign- they departed in the Preliminary Round last season. The Wasps, under new boss Tony Reid for the first time in a competitive fixture, reached the Second Qualifying Round last season, knocking out Worthing on the way.

The visitors defeated East Preston three-nil in midweek.

Tooting & Mitcham United V Erith & Belvedere

The only ampersand derby of the round, the Terrors welcome a side from the Southern Counties East League Premier to Imperial Fields. Tooting have a fine FA Cup pedigree, but the last of those glory days were more than a decade ago and they lost at preliminary Round stage last season. The last time they met, in 2005/06, the Terrors won two-one.

Molesey v Phoenix Sports

Sports travel to the Combined Counties League Premier South Moles, who will undoubtedly be well known to Isthmian watchers due to their time with us. Sports were in Extra Preliminary action last season too, winning a pulsating three-three draw with Lancing by eleven goals to ten on penalties, and will hope for an easier ride this time around!

FA Cup Factfile's Phil Annets has recently released a fabulous new book to celebrate the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the competition. FA Cup 150 (see what he did there?) is available here and is packed with stats, lists and quirky facts. It truly is an essential read for any supporter.
