It’s FA Cup weekend once more- part two: North Division

By Ian Townsend

This weekend our Pitching In Isthmian Premier clubs join the majority of our North, South Central and South East sides in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. Here’s part two of our preview, focusing on our North Division entrants.

AFC Sudbury travel to face Potton United. The yellows are unbeaten so far this season, and travel on the back of a three game winning streak. United, from the United Counties Premier, got back to winning ways on Monday after two defeats, and defeated Walsham-le-Willows in the last round.

Barking host Ilford- again! When we wrote this preview we thought that Ilford were hosting Aveley, but since then it has been revealed that the last round match between Barking and Ilford will have to be replayed due to an ineligible player situation on behalf of the Essex Senior side, who- of course- won the original tie.

Wingate and Finchley host Basildon United. How tricky that will be for the Premier Division side will depend on which Basildon turn up! The Bees lost seven-nil last Saturday as they hosted Grays Athletic, but bounced right back to score four at Great Wakering Rovers on Monday. The hosting Blues fell to defeat at Haringey on Monday.

Cheshunt, who lost their unbeaten record as they fell to narrow defeat at Enfield Town on Monday, and face a tough challenge as they travel to Brentwood Town. Town have won two of their three league matches so far and defeated Leighton Town in the last round.

Bury Town really haven’t started the campaign the way we might have expected, but they have won their only home match so far- and will expect to win another when Norwich United come to call. United are in the Eastern Counties League these days, and have also had an up and down sort of season so far.

Canvey Island are on the road, travelling to Bedford Town. Their hosts are currently in fifth place in Southern Central Division One, and defeated St Neots Town in the last round- they’ve lost only once so far this season. The Gulls can go one better- they are still unbeaten.

Enfield Town host Dereham Town, as our North Division side travel to Donkey Lane. The Towners remain unbeaten and have won three matches from four so far to sit in second place in the table, whilst the Magpies lost for the first time on Monday and defeated Cogenhoe United in the last round.

We have an all-North Division tie as Felixstowe and Walton United host Great Wakering Rovers. The visitors need to bounce back after conceding four goals in each of their last two matches, whilst the Seasiders were impressive in defeating Dereham Town on Monday.

Romford travel to Kings Langley, having defeated Harpenden Town and Kensington Borough to get to this stage. Their hosts are a step higher, but haven’t managed to win a match yet this season, and have indeed lost four of five, scoring only one goal.

Potters Bar Town started the season well but have lost their last three matches. They travel to face in-form North Division Stowmarket Town, whose only defeat this season came at the hands of hot title favourites Maldon and Tiptree, who beat them last Saturday due to a late goal. That looks a potential banana skin, the Scholars will have to be at their best!

Tilbury hit seven in the last round, and they travel to face an Ashford Town side who got through after a replay and extra time- but who won five-nil on Bank Holiday Monday. The Dockers haven’t had the start to the season they might have hoped for, but will undoubtedly be up for a cup tie- particularly given how good they were in the last one.
