It's Semi-Final time!

By Ian Townsend

Most of our players can now go and relax, but for sixteen sides, everything gets rather more critical. It's time for our Play Off Semi-Finals.

So, we have our four champions. Bishop's Stortford, Chatham Town, Hashtag United and Basingstoke Town each know that they will be playing at a higher level next season- but now it's time to find out who will be going with them.

Tuesday night sees the Semi-Finals for Pitching In Isthmian North and South East. In the North Division, long-time leaders AFC Sudbury will welcome Grays Athletic. There were nineteen points between the sides at the end of the campaign, and the Yellows have already defeated their visitors twice this season, but all that means nothing in this winner takes all encounter.

The other Semi-Final sees us head east and stop just before we fall into the sea, Lowestoft Town playing host to Heybridge Swifts. The two sides met only ten days previously and that match ended in a four-four draw, so we may be in for a treat- but somebody has to win this one, even if it comes down to the heartbreak of a penalty shootout. Both matches between the sides have ended level this season, although their first meeting was rather less dramatic.

In the South East Division, we'll be bringing you a report from Whitehawk v Beckenham Town. Only one point separated the sides at the end of the campaign, and both recorded home wins against the other during the regular season, which we suppose makes the Hawks favourites, if only just.

On the Kent coast, long time leaders Ramsgate welcome the last day interlopers, Hythe Town. The Rams form tailed off as we approached the end of the campaign, and indeed their final day victory was their first in seven matches; whilst the Cannons ended the season like their lives depended on it, with six consecutive wins during which they conceded only two goals, keeping four clean sheets.

Wednesday sends us to the Pitching In Isthmian Premier, where Hornchurch welcome Cray Wanderers. The Urchins defeated the Wands home and away during the regular season, but the visitors travel on the back of a nine match unbeaten record and certainly shouldn't be ruled out.

The other match sees our two promoted North Division sides from last season, as Canvey Island welcome Aveley. Both sides have had magnificent campaigns; the Gulls lose for the first time in in two months as they fell to defeat against Lewes on Saturday, whilst the Millers already have one prize, the Velocity Cup, in their trophy cabinet and will be confident they can take another. The two sides met only a week ago, a two-two draw the outcome- the Gulls winning their meeting in January by the only goal of the game.

We will be covering a match in Pitching In Isthmian South Central, as Walton & Hersham, who saw their title depart with a last minute Thatcham equaliser on Saturday, try to bounce back against Northwood. The Swans have beaten the Woods three times this season, but never after taking such a psychological blow. The travelling Woods have had a magnificent season whatever happens, but won't be short of confidence and will expect to spring a surprise.

Finally, Marlow welcome Hanworth Villa. Only a point separated the two at the end of the campaign, although the hosts did do the double over their visitors. That said, the Villains have ended the campaign magnificently, winning eight of their last ten, and will be confident of shocking their hosts. Marlow have only won won of their last four, but are consistently difficult to beat and have made scoring late goals something of an art form this season.

All matches kick off at 7.45 PM.

The Finals will be as follows:

South East: Friday 28th at 7.45 PM.
North: Saturday 29th at 3PM.
South Central: Sunday 30th at 3 PM.
Premier: Monday 1st at 3PM.

The highest placed finalist will host.
