League remembers, lest we forget

By David Watters

The Ryman League's fans, players and officials will mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday on Saturday by observing two minutes of silence before kicking off in their league and cup fixtures.

The British and Commonwealth servicemen and women who've made the ultimate sacrifice in conflicts around the world since The Great War of 1914-18 will be remembered before fixtures in all three divisions of the Ryman League and the second qualifying round of the Buildbase FA Trophy.

Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, the nearest to Armistice Day on November 11 when the guns of the global conflict finally fell silent in 1918 after four years of war. Two minutes' silence is held at 11am before the laying of wreaths at war memorials around the country, the silence representing the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 when the war ended.

The Ryman League and leagues up and down the country are remembering the fallen at fixtures throughout the weekend after England and Scotland defied a FIFA ban on Friday night to wear armbands featuring poppies in their World Cup qualifier at Wembley.
