Whitstable Town’s plans for next season were given another boost on Thursday when the Ryman South’s Oystermen named Gary Owen as their new U21 manager.

The Addisham-based coach, a UEFA A Licence holder, is Director of Football at the Chelsea Foundation Academy at Sandwich Technology School and his association with the Premier League club’s Academy goes back to 2004.

The Oystermen say they have retained the majority of last season’s squad and will be holding trials for potential players after the club returns to training on June 28.

Owen says his emphasis at The Belmont, pictured, will be focused on player development. "It’s what any role at this aged is all about," said the coach, whose appointment follows the arrival of brothers Jim and Danny Ward earlier this month to replace the departed Nicky Southall as the Kent club’s new management team.

The Oystermen have also announced that they are now looking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced U18s manager, a key link in the club’s player development programme, and are inviting potential candidates to apply.
