Pitching In Isthmian League- supporters predictions 2021-22: Whitehawk

By Ian Townsend

We’re heading for a key moment, as we’re off to East Brighton, home of that noisy bunch at Whitehawk. Pete Gibbons is our guide.

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. Their predicted 1-20 (or 22) will be worked into a final table which you will see just before the big kick off. Pete Gibbons predicts that his Hawks will be champions. You’d be able to hear the celebrations in…Hastings!

1. Thinking about last season- what there was of it- were there any highlights for you?

Last season was terrible and we sat 16th of 19 when the season was (mercifully?) ended, but it was great seeing the increased attendance, with multiple games in a row selling out. A 2-1 win against Barton Rovers in the FA Trophy had a particularly good atmosphere. Also Marvin Hamilton’s backheel goal against Faversham was amazing!

2. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2021-22 campaign?

Henry Muggeridge, our captain, will again be our most important player. We’ve always played better with him in the side. Rhyl Ovenden has been starting for the last few seasons too and seems to be getting better and better. New signings, in particular Javaun Splatt and Ronnie Conlon have been looking great in pre season too.

3. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

I think last season was an anomaly and we will be there or thereabouts. Hastings United look as strong as usual, but I’m going to be bold and say we can win the league! We’ve got a great new set of players as well as retaining some important ones.

4. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

Now that Guernsey have sadly moved divisions, Hastings away is my favourite- loads of great places to drink in the town and a traditional ground. We’ve got them on August Bank Holiday Monday as well, which is great. Other than that, I’m looking forward to Whitstable away, plus Tooting and Mitcham away in the cup - again, two places with loads of great pubs.

5. What is your favourite away ground?

Hastings as I mentioned, and I also reckon Burgess Hill’s is an underrated one. I also enjoy a trip to Phoenix Sports

6. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?

Bognor Regis Town, definitely. Other teams in Sussex like Hastings it’s generally quite a friendly rivalry, although it is annoying that they do keep beating us! Others who have been going longer than me would say the likes of Wealdstone.

7. What advice would you give to any away supporter visiting you for the first time?

Chat to everyone, Whitehawk fans are a very friendly bunch of people.

8. Who is your favourite player of all time (for your club)- and why?

I’ve only been coming regularly for four seasons, so missed regularly seeing the likes of Danny Mills and Sergio Torres, but in the past few years we’ve spent in the Isthmian League it’s been our captain Henry Muggeridge. A great leader!

9. Who will be in the top five at the end of the season?

Whitehawk, Hastings United, Ashford United, Cray Valley PM, Herne Bay
