Pitching In Isthmian Supporters predictions 23-24: Sutton Common Rovers

By Ian Townsend

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. We’re off to Sutton Common Rovers, in the company of Jonathan Tanton

1. Thinking about last season, what were your highlights?

Winning the relegation play-off against Crawley Down Gatwick must rate as the best highlight of the season, keeping us in the Isthmian League South Central.  Also wins against Tooting & Mitcham, and Merstham, which, late in the season, marked our turnaround in form

2. And what was the worst moment?

Without doubt the 0-5 thumping at home to Chertsey Town early in the season, and then going down 1-0 to the same side in the away fixture, in the 96th minute!

3. Which member of your squad was your Player of the Season - and why?

My vote went to Tyler Cox for his overall contribution throughout the season, but tribute must be made to goalkeeper James Dillon, and central defender Bertie Lloyd who were both instrumental in keeping us up.

4. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2023-24 campaign?

Our striker Conan Torpey never fails to give his all in every game he plays, and in defence, the highly influential Antonio Simeone.

5. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

We have managed to retain a core of players who finished strongly in the second half of last season, and if they can continue this form, then I would say mid-table – 12th is a conservative estimate.

6. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

Corinthian-Casuals away – purely because of their history.
Ascot United at home – I don’t think I’ve seen them play, so a 1st for me.
Hartley Wintney away – our left back would have a score to settle at that ground!

7. What is your favourite Isthmian away ground?

Marlow – if the football is not up to par, you can always watch the red kites!

8. If you regularly travelled away, which ground served the best food?

I don’t really eat at football grounds, and only drink water, but from what I’ve seen Tooting & Mitcham (now relegated) , and Chertsey Town have good facilities.

9. Choose your top five:

Ascot United, Marlow, Hanworth Villa, Corinthian Casuals, Leatherhead

Right, it's your turn! If you'd like to represent your club, please email Ian at townsendaround@gmail.com and you'll see your answers here soon.

Where next?

A Tuesday Friendly Round Up Many of our sides were in action last night. Here- to the best of our knowledge- is what happened, with big wins for Marlow, Brentwood Town, Chichester City and Sheppey United
