Pitching In Isthmian Supporters predictions 23-24: Billericay Town

By Ian Townsend

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. We’re heading to Billericay, with Ben Mapp giving us directions

1. Thinking about last season, what were your highlights?

Winning away at Canvey was my favourite game of the season, but the entertaining home win against Horsham and comeback win at home to Bognor Regis also stood out. Scoring with the last kick of the season to win at Corinthian-Casuals on the final day was nice too.

2. And what was the worst moment?

Losing at Cray Wanderers in the 97th minute (with an ex-player scoring the winner) after coming back from 2-0 and 3-2 down in the last 15 minutes definitely hurt. Honourable mentions go to losing at Biggleswade Town in the FA Cup and losing 0-4 at home to Enfield Town.

3. Which member of your squad was your Player of the Season - and why?

Brad Stevenson for sure. Top scoring with 21 goals from midfield was impressive, and he could dictate games and swing them back into our favour. He also filled in all over the pitch, playing in central midfield, as a winger and even as a striker when called upon. I dread to think where we would’ve finished without him!

4. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2023-24 campaign?

There’s too many to name! Retaining Brad Stevenson is huge, and hopefully he can build on the brilliant campaign last year. Of the new signings, they have all done well in pre-season but Jay Porter and Tom Bender are great additions defensively, Matt Johnson and Adam Leathers have really bolstered our midfield options and re-signing Moses Emmanuel, supported by Ade Azeez and Frankie Merrifield, hopefully mean goals won’t be an issue! Keep an eye out for young winger Richard Asamoah too, he’s really stood out in pre-season.

5. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

With the squad we have, I think we have to be aiming for the top spots, thus a top 5 finish should be realistic, but this league can be very unpredictable!

6. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

The first game is always the most exciting for me, so I'm looking forward to Kingstonian at home on the 12th. The Essex derbies are always enjoyable too, so our games against Hashtag, Canvey, Concord and Hornchurch should be intriguing. Dulwich away is always a highlight too, and I’m looking forward to doing Whitehawk away as it’s the only ground in the division I am yet to visit.

7. What is your favourite Isthmian away ground?

The Dripping Pan, Lewes. The location and uniqueness of the ground stand out to me every time I visit.

8. If you regularly travelled away, which ground served the best food?

I haven’t sampled every away team’s food, but last season, the cheeseburger at Margate was the most enjoyable and very welcome on a cold December Friday night!

9. Choose your top five:

Billericay Town, Hornchurch, Dulwich Hamlet, Lewes, Hastings United
