Pitching In Isthmian Supporters predictions 23-24:Cray Wanderers

By Ian Townsend

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. We’re off to visit Cray Wanderers, with help from Martyn Beadle

1. Thinking about last season, what were your highlights?

I think there were too many to name. Going to watch them every week and not expecting to lose was a great feeling, whereas during the previous 2 seasons we were wondering how many we were going to lose by.

2. And what was the worst moment?

The worst moment was the play-off defeat to Hornchurch. Being 2-1 down and 3-2 down, coming back to draw 3-3 and then to lose on penalties was heartbreaking. I think if the game had gone on for another 5 - 10 minutes we would have nicked it.

3. Which member of your squad was your Player of the Season - and why?

Shaun Rowley was our player of the year last season, his consistency in goal was immense. If it wasn't for him then we wouldn't have got into the play offs. He’s also a nice bloke off the pitch too.

4. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2023-24 campaign?

David Ijaha. He came into his own last season; a big, strong midfielder who delivered probably the best individual performance I have ever seen at this level in the Play Off against Hornchurch.  Also Sammy Wood for his experience.

5. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

I would hope for a top 10 finish, which was the same expectation as last season, but if we can push for the play offs again then that would be a great season.

6. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

I’m looking forward to going to Chatham Town, they get big crowds.

7. What is your favourite Isthmian away ground?

Bognor Regis Town’s Nyewood Lane is a tidy ground.

8. If you regularly travelled away, which ground served the best food?

The best food by far is at Potters Bar Town.

9. Choose your top five:

Hornchurch, Dulwich Hamlet, Chatham Town, Billericay Town, Hastings United
