Rams and Chats continue their title fight- but most of our intrigue is at the other end!

By Ian Townsend

Faversham Town and Corinthian need positive results to stave off relegation, Hill and Heath try to escape the bottom four- whilst at the other end the Hawks, Millers and Becks try to remain ahead of the chasing pack

Leaders Ramsgate, top of the table only on goal difference, face the challenge of fifth place Beckenham Town on the Kent coast. The Rams are on an eleven match unbeaten run that has included six draws, and have had to come from behind to draw their last two, whilst their opponents were hammered at Sheppey United last time out, but know that their top five spot is secure at least until Monday whatever happens, following the defeat of closest challengers Ashford United yesterday.

Chatham Town will be hoping for a Ramsgate slip up as they head to Sussex to take on Lancing. The Chats seem to be over their stumble last month and have won their last three, whilst the Lancers, four points clear of the bottom four, aren’t out of relegation danger yet. With two wins and two draws from their last four they are due another digit in the W column, but would struggle to find more difficult opponents as they strive for that victory. Town won the first meeting between the sides by two goals to one, back in December.

Third place Whitehawk host a Sussex derby, Chichester City making the journey along the A27. The Hawks have slipped up a little of late, losing their last two, results which have seen them fall six points behind the leading duo. They are still firm favourites for play off qualification, however, four points clear of Ashford United, six clear of Sheppey United and Hythe Town. City are firmly in mid table and ended a five game losing streak last time out by coming within a minute of defeating the leaders.

Cray Valley PM, in fourth, make the trip to Greatness Park to take on Sevenoaks Town. Three consecutive defeats seem to have fatally damaged Oaks play off hopes, leaving them with eight points to make up and only five matches left. The Millers, in contrast, ahead of Beckenham Town on goal difference, have lost only one of their last eight- but were defeated by Oaks when they last met, on February 7th, Solomon Baugh with the only goal of the game.

Sheppey United will hope to keep their play off hopes alive as they welcome Three Bridges. The Ites fell to defeat at Haywards Heath Town last time out and have slipped to four points behind the top five; whilst Bridges are still looking nervously over their shoulders, four points clear of the bottom four after losing their last three matches. The Ites were hammered four-one at Jubilee Field on the last day of February.

Hythe Town travel to Burgess Hill Town, both sides needing points for entirely different reasons. The Cannons, four points away from the top five, haven’t yet given up on their promotion aspirations- whilst the Hillians dropped into the bottom four after VCD Athletic’s win yesterday and need a victory- indeed, they need one very much after five defeats from their last six. The Cannons defeated Hill as recently as February 21st- but it was close, a Liam Smith goal after four minutes the only goal of the game.

East Grinstead Town welcome Sittingbourne. The travelling Brickies are nine unbeaten- a run which has seen them open up a seven point gap over the bottom four- and will be confident of another three points. The Wasps, however, are only a point further back and will be cock-a-hoop after damaging Whitehawk’s promotion chances in midweek.

We’ve a massive match on Salters Lane as bottom side Faversham Town welcome eighteenth place Haywards Heath Town. The Lilywhites are thirteen points from safety with only five matches left to play, so will need something miraculous to escape the bottom four. They are also eleven points behind their opponents, so even the chance of a relegation play off is a fair distance away- but they certainly have to win today. Heath have suddenly perked up, coming within moments of defeating leaders Ramsgate before winning against Sheppey United, and will need to remain perky- two points from safety with four games left, a victory looks a must for their survival chances, too.

Second bottom Corinthian find themselves eleven points from safety with a maximum of twelve points available to them. The Hoops have given themselves the slightest glimpse of hope by winning their last two, but it is slight- even the nine point gap between themselves and a relegation play off place looks almost insurmountable. Littlehampton Town are their visitors, and the Golds seem to have just about put a poor run behind them, with only one defeat from four.
