Rams return to the summit- but only just

By Ian Townsend

Just a point for Ramsgate at Becks as third welcome second, whilst Wasps continue Faversham's woes, Cannons defeat Corinthian, and Oaks win at Millers

Beckenham Town and Ramsgate knew that a win for either of them at Eden Park last night would send them top- but although the Rams did indeed take over at the summit, neither side managed that victory. The Rams went ahead midway through the first half after Ashley Miller's shot took a deflection and left Damian Niemczycki in the Town goal helpless- and they held that lead until five minutes from time, when Louie Theophanous did Louie Theophanous things, putting home the rebound from a Danny Waldren free kick.

The Rams go a point clear at the top, with Becks two points behind in third and Chatham Town the meat in that particular sandwich- albeit with a game in hand over both of them.

Cray Valley have suddenly lost their way a little, and last night succumbed to a third consecutive one-nil defeat, Sevenoaks Town the latest victors. The fourth place Millers conceded just before the break, Solomon Baugh scoring for Oaks to make it five in his last six matches and give his side three points. That win sees Oaks up to eighth- two points behind fifth place Whitehawk.

The aforementioned Hawks welcomed Ashford United, and both sides had to be content with a point after four first half goals. Charlie Harris opened the scoring early on, although given he was taking the corner it's debatable that he meant to do it- only for Danny Parish to quickly equalise for the visitors. On the half hour the visitors went ahead, Gary Lockyer scoring from the spot, only for the Hawks to level just before the break, Joel Daly firing home. That was that for the goals, although it might not have been apart from the heroics of Jacob Russell in the United goal, the keeper saving a Harris penalty in the closing stages.

East Grinstead Town moved up to thirteenth place with their second one-nil win in a row- and made life even more difficult for bottom side Faversham Town, who saw their two match unbeaten run come to an end. Charlie Greenwood got the only goal of the game just after half time, and it saw the Wasps open up a three point gap over the bottom three- whilst the Lilywhites are fourteen points from safety.

Second bottom Corinthian were also on the receiving end of a defeat- in their case at Hythe Town. The Cannons made it three wins from their last four and moved up to eleventh, despite falling behind in the first half, Sam Bewick with the goal for the visitors. Johan caney-Bryan equalised for the hosts just after the hour, and right at the end Jason Fregene grabbed all three points and delighted the Reachfields faithful.

Burgess Hill Town remain in the bottom four despite Dan Perry getting his twenty first and twenty second goals of the season- because visitors Chichester City managed two goals, too. Perry gave the Hillians the lead eight minutes before half time, only for Lloyd Rowlatt to equalise fifteen minutes from time. It took only four minutes for Perry to restore home advantage, but five minutes from time Alex Weinberger ensured a point for the visitors, who are up to tenth. Only three points separates thirteenth from seventeenth- but that's seven without a win for Hill.

Finally, VCD Athletic and Three Bridges delivered a goalless draw at Oakwood. That's six without a victory for Vickers.
