Rovers boss to be named in days

Great Wakering Rovers chairman John Galley is flattered by the interest in the vacant manager's post at Burroughs Park and has told fans he hopes to name the Ryman North club's new boss within days.

Before seeing Rovers lose 3-0 at Dereham on Saturday, their second defeat in a week under careataker Tom Harding and their sixth in succession, Galley revealed that more than 30 candidates have come forward to succeed Gary Ansell and that he hopes to name his successor by the start of next week.

The Rovers chairman, pictured, told echo-news.co.uk: "After a meeting of the Great Wakering Rovers Committee members a shortlist has been comprised of more than 30 applications for the vacant manager’s role at the club. It was extremely flattering for our club to receive this many applications through our website, email, phone calls and social media and proves that Great Wakering Rovers is a respected club in the Ryman League.

“The shortlisted personnel have all got the ability to bring something different to the club and after an interview process taking place over the next two to three days we hope to be able to announce the new manager after this weekend when the committee will look at all of the information attained.”

Former Rovers player Ansell, pictured above, stepped up from assistant manager last season to take the helm as the successor to former boss Dan Trenkel with the Essex club fighting for survival.

Galley also paid tribute to the 37-year-old who decided to step down after he felt unable to defend recent performances to the club’s board.

He added: “We must thanked Gary Ansell for his hard work over the past year. But we must now look to the future and hopefully what will be exciting times ahead as we approach our centenary year. We are keen not to rush any decisions so we can, fingers crossed, make the right choice for the village and the club.”
