Saturday round up!

By Ian Townsend

Billericay Town, AFC Hornchurch and Whyteleafe are our league leaders after a goal-packed Saturday.

Billericay Town remain three points clear at the top of the Bostik Premier Division, but for much of the afternoon it looked as if their lead would be cut to just one point. Second place Leiston had stormed into an early lead- and indeed had finished their match as three-nil victors against Metropolitan Police- before the league leaders struck, Ricky Modeste flicking home a Sam Deering strike seven minutes into added time. It was tough on visitors Tooting and Mitcham United, who had defended valiantly- for the last half an hour with ten men after Jordan Wilson’s dismissal- but who remain one place off the bottom and without a league victory.

Wingate and Finchley are in third place, recording a 1-0 victory over bottom club Worthing, whilst Hendon slip to fourth, courtesy of defeat by a Folkestone Invicta side who showed resilience and character once more to come from two goals down to register a three-two victory. Staines Town are up to fifth, two goals from Jonathan Hippolyte helping to seal a three-one win over Lowestoft Town, whilst Dulwich Hamlet demonstrated conclusively that they are coming into form, thrashing four goals past highly rated Leatherhead in front of the League’s highest crowd of the day- 1752- to move up into sixth.

If there was such a thing as a Performance of the Day Award then it would undoubtedly go to Kingstonian. The K’s entertained Harlow Town at Fetcham Grove, and Craig Edwards’ boys thrashed six goals without replay, four before half time, to send their fans back to their courtesy coaches happy for the trip back to Kingston. In the other matches, Dorking Wanderers defeated Brightlingsea Regent by the odd goal in five at Westhumble, Tonbridge Angels took all of the points at Burgess Hill Town- for whom former Worthing player/manager Gary Elphick made a debut- with a 1-0 victory, and it was all square between Margate and Harrow Borough, Thurrock and Merstham, and Needham Market and Enfield. Highlights from the last match will be available on the Bostik League Show later today.

In the North Division, AFC Hornchurch retained their magnificent one hundred per cent record with a two-nil victory at Norwich United, whilst Heybridge Swifts lost theirs, falling 3-2 at a resurgent AFC Sudbury. Haringey Borough made it nineteen points from seven matches with a 2-0 victor over Soham Town Rangers, whilst Bowers and Pitsea walloped four goals, including a brace from David Knight, to wrap up a 4-2 victory over Potters Bar Town. Bury Town are in fifth place courtesy of a 2-1 victory at Cheshunt, whilst Canvey Island moved into sixth with a hard fought 1-0 win over Romford. Dereham Town are in seventh, earning a point and sharing six goals with Barking, and it went goal crazy at Mildenhall Town, the hosts scoring four times against Tilbury but still losing the match, as the Dockers got six!

Whyteleafe lead the South Division on goal difference from Lewes, but they left it late, a goal from Daniel Ajakaiye earning all three points at home to East Grinstead Town. The Rooks were also made to work hard, falling behind in the first minute at Walton Casuals before a Jamie Brotherton brace saw them run out 2-0 victors. Sittingbourne sit in third, smashing five goals past a sorry Horsham who seem to be struggling to come to terms with the 3G surface at Culver Road, South Park are fourth after coming from two goals down to earn a draw at home to Hythe Town, whilst Carshalton Athletic are sixth, a last minute Phoenix Sports equaliser robbing them of two extra points.

Kenny Pogue scored on his debut for Hastings United, but that didn’t stop his side from falling to a 4-3 defeat at Molesey, whilst performance of the day undoubtedly goes to Shoreham, who managed their first victory of the season and moved off the bottom with victory over highly fancied Greenwich Borough at Middle Road. Guernsey now prop up the rest, losing 3-0 at Ashford United in an early kick off.
